________________ THE EVOLUTIONARY PROCESS AND PAIN May I be an enemy to no one and the friend of what abides eternally. May I love, seek and attain only what is good. May I desire happiness for all and harbour envy for none. May I never find joy in the misfortune of one who has wronged me. May I never wait for the rebuke of others, but always rebuke myself until I make reparation. May I reconcile friends who are mad at each other. May I, insofar as I can, give all necessary help to my friends and to all who are in need. May I never fail a friend in trouble. May I be able to soften the pain of the grief-stricken and give them comforting words. May I respect myself." What is the real reason for this kindly consideration of others? There is an eternal law that we reap what we sow. So when we treat others the way we want to be treated, we know what we have set in motion and what we can expect in return. THE LAW OF CONSEQUENCES One consequence of the transcendent law underlying the cosmos is that the cosmos evidences order, regularity, and mutuality. All existences, great and small, are linked in a web of interdependent relationships. Every relationship has a certain polarity and order and there is a dynamic exchange between male and female, heaven and earth, mind and matter, subject and object, light and dark, being and notbeing, this and that, myself and the other. The movement within and between beings in a relationship is the source of evolution. This motion is seen in the regular cycles of Nature, the changing seasons. In addition, interdependence is the basis for teachings which deny egoism and acquisitiveness Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
