The collcetion has long been known as a store house of aneient fables, and as the most original attainable source to whiel almost the whole of this kind of literature, from the Panchatantra and Pilpay's fables down to the nursery stories of the present day, is traeeable; and it has been eonsidered desirable, in the interest of Buddhistie studies as well as for more general literary purposes, that an edition and translation of the eomplete work should be prepared.
