The next stage is known as Desavirati, otherwise called Samayatá-samyata gunasthanaica. It is here the soul which was so long guided by the mere influence of faith, first realises the great importance of conduct and so can take the twelve vows which really enable a man to fight against the energies of kurma. This stage attaches much importance to different kinds of behaviour on account of which it has been divided into three parts. First, in Jaghanya desavirati, a man takes a vow not to drink intoxicating drugs or to eat flesh. He constantly repeats the Màgadhi salutation to the Five Great Ones—Salutation to Ahirantu, salutation to Siddha, to Acharya, to Upadhaya, and to all the Sâdhus of the world.” The soul may still rise higher while continuing in this stage and without forsaking the previous vows may take a fresh vow to make money in righteous ways only.
