________________ FOREWORD It is with great pleasure that the first part of Mallavadi's Nayacakra with Simhasuri's commentary, Nyayagamanusa rini the most important work not only on Jainism but on Indian Philosophy, is now presented to the world of scholars as No. CXVI of the Gaekwad's Oriental Series. The publication of this work started twenty years ago was unfortunately delayed on account of the sad and untimely death of the first editor, Muni Sri Caturavijayaji, in Bikaner in 1944 A. D., at the young age of 49, when 232 pages of the work were printed. The editor, the distinguished pupil of Daksinavihari Sri Amaravijayaji Maharaja, was already known to scholars as early as 1928 by his edition of Jainastotrasamuccaya. He later on enjoyed reputation as a great scholar by editing the two parts of Jainastotrasamdoha in 1932 and 1936 respectively with very learned introductions full of literary and historical information. It was evidently not an easy task to find out another competent person to complete the work of Muni Sri Caturavijayaji. At last in 1947 the choice happily fell on Pandit L. B. Gandhi, the learned Jain Pandit of the Oriental Institute, who carefully edited the work from pages 233-314 ( upto the end of the fourth chapter) with an introduction giving detailed information about the author and the commentator, an outline of the work, the list of works and authors quoted by the commentator in the first four chapters and a critical note on the MSS. on which the text is based. It is gratifying to note that the early announcement of the publication of this work in the GOS. inspired others to undertake the work for publication, and the two parts comprising six chapters edited by Acarya Sri Vijayalabdhasurisvara were published from Chani in 1948 and 1951 respectively. The Jaina Atmananda Sabha of Bhavanagar is also contemplating to publish the work which is being edited by the well-known scholar, Muni Sri Jambuvijayaji Maharaja", who has already contributed to the study of Mallavadi. We eagerly await the publication of this edition. 1 Cf. Sri Atmananda Prakasa Vol. 45, Nos. 7, 9, 10; - Feb., May and June 1948.
