The second chapter treats of Vidhividhi Naya and examines the several doctrines such as Apauruseyatva, Asatkarya, Purusa, Niyati, Kala, Svabhava and Vivarta-undoubtedly a very interesting discussion. The third chapter discussing Vidhi-ubhaya Naya examines the Purusa and his states, the three qualitiesSattva, Rajas and Tamas--and Sukha, Duhkha and Moha, the Asatkaryavada, the Pradhana, the cause and effect and the problem of God as the Creator of the world. The fourth chapter dealing with Vidhi-Niyama Naya continues the discussion on the problem of God. This is in short the nature of the first four chapters which are published in this Volume. : The whole biographical literature on Mallavadi except the Mallavadikatha in Prakrita which was unfortunately not made available to the second editor by the Trustees of the Sanghavi Pada Bhandar at Pattan, has been very systematically presented in the Sanskrit introduction. It tells us that Mallavadi, the Prince of disputants, was a great logician, living in Valabhi in Saurastra, that he was an advocate of Yugapadupayogavada, that he composed Dvadasaranayacakra, with the well-known Arya verse, Vidhiniyama...and a commentary on the Sanmati Prakarana of Siddhasena Divakara not available at present, that 'he defeated in Broach the Buddhist opponent, Buddhananda, who had previously defeated his maternal uncle Jinananda, and that he conquered the Bauddhas and their Spirits in the Vira Samvat 884 (= Vikrama Samvat 414). It is thus clear from this account that Mallavadi flourished in the first part of the fifth century of the Vikrama era and was. not earlier than Siddhasena Divakara. The text of Nayacakra as preserved in Simhasuri's commentary contains a reference to Siddhasena Divakara, to Dinnagat and to the views of Bhartrhari in many places.
