________________ FOREWORD VIS logician?. As the Pattan and Jesalmere MSS. were not available to us, we made inquiries about the MS. in other places with a view to ascertaining whether this work of Mallavadi is identical with the Nyayabindutikatippani published in the Bibliotheca Buddhica No. XI at St. Petersbourg in 1909. Our inquiries show that there is one MS. ( No. 288 of 1873-74 ) in the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Poona, which was bought at Jesalmere and was perhaps copied from the palm-leaf MS. in the Jesalmere Bhandar. We are informed by Prof. P K. Gode, M. A. the learned Curator of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute that the MS. and the printed text in the Bibliotheca Buddhica No. XI are identical. We are no doubt most grateful to Prof. Gode for this valuable information. The author of the Nyayabindutikatippani mentions the authorities such as Dinnaga, Sabaraswami, Kumarila, Bauddhas, Naiyayikas, Carvaka, Vedantavadi, Samkhya and Vaiyakaranas, but does not refer to Jainism and the Jain works on logic. He is, therefore, different from the author of the Nayacakra. At any rate this Mallavadi, the commentator on Dharmottara's commentary, must have flourished after Dharmottara (9th Cen. A. D.) and even on this ground should be distinguished from Mallavadi, the author of the Nayacakra. .. Simhasuri, the commentator of the Nayacakra, quotes the three Gathis which appear in the Visesavasyakabhasya of Jinabhadra who composed the Bhasya in the V. S. 666, but does not refer to Dharmakirti (second half of the 7th century A. D.). * He must have, therefore, flourished in the earlier part of the 7th century A. Ds. The commentary which has fully drawn upon all the important works not only of Jainism but also of other Systems of Indian Philosophy bears testimony to the profound knowledge of Simhasuri. BARODA, GENERAL EDITOR 26-6-1952 1 Dharmakirti's Nyayabindu with Dharmottara's commentary is published in the Kashi Sanskrit Series, No. 22, 1924 A. D. CE. Sanmati, intro. p. 115; Muni Sri Jambuvijayaji: Sri Jaina Satya Prakasa Vol. 17, No. 7, April 1952, p. 126; Catalogue of MSS. at Jesalmere, GOS. 21, intro. p. 29. Cf, Sanmati: intro. p. 65, 6tb or 7th century of the Vikrama era. Muni Sri Jambuvijayaji: Sri Atmananda Prakasa Vol. 45, No. 7, Feb. 1948, p. 137.
