FOREWORD Siddhasena and Mallavadi must have, therefore, flourished after Dinnaga who himself has quoted two Karikas. 156 and 157 from the second Kanda of Bhartshari's Vakyapadiya' Bhartshari, the author of Vakyapadiya, was the pupil of Vasurata who criticized Vasubandhu, the teacher of Dinnaga. Thus both Bhartrhari and Dinnaga were contemporaries, and as such Bharthari referred to by the Chinese traveller Itsing as a Buddhist scholar must be different from Bhartrhari, the author of the Vakyapadiya, who was a Vedic follower of Advaitavada. As Mallavadi refers to Siddhasena Divakara and does not refer to Jinabhadragani (V. S. 666 ) he cannot be very much removed from Siddhasena Divakara, and there is nothing to prevent us from supposing that both Siddhasena and Mallavadi were contemporaries'. Siddhasena is supposed to have flourished at the end of the fourth century of the Vikrama era or the beginning of the fifth century. The tradition of Mallavadi's conquest over Buddhists in the V. S. 414 accords very well with the date of Siddhasena. It can, therefore, be stated that Mallavadi, the Svetambara Acarya, flourished between the last part of the fourth century of the Vikrama era and the first half of the fifth century". There is, however, one point which deserves consideration in connection with the date of Mallavadi. There is a work called Dharmottaratippana ( Paricchedas 1-3) attributed to Mallavadi. The MS. at Pattan is described as damaged and written in V. S. 1231 while one of the two MSS. at Jesalmere is described as consisting of 1300 slokas. The title of the work shows that the work seems to be a commentary on Dharmottara's commentary on the Nyayabindu of Dharmakirti, the well-known Buddhist 1 Cf.
