The reason is that the air after doing its work in the lungs changes and becomes carbonic acid gas a poison and if retained will injure the system. 3. Expiration should be as slow as possible, but continuous, taking longer than inspiration. Before taking a breathing exercise or rather in starting to take a breathing exercise, first breath out the air that is in the lungs. The body should not be bent or restrained by clothing; after inhaling the throat should be closed. To improve the breathing a five minutes exercise may be practised night and morning as above described, starting by exhaling, then inhaling, retaining, and exhaling.
