It is only when the determinants are different that a thing oan be regarded as positive or negative or both, as the case may be. This is the only meaning of the Jaina doctrine of Syád-Väda and a failure to appreciate this fundamental statement of the Jaina Philo. sophy is sure to load -as it has done,-the acutest minds to fall into the most grievous of errors. The original Vedanta Sutra,-“ No; because it is impossible in respect of one and the same thing" (2. 2. 33 ), is taken to refer to the Jaina theory. In commenting on this Sutra, Nimbárka says" The Jainas attribute sets of two contradictory features, such as existence and non-existence etc., to every object; the correctness of this is not established. It is impossible for contradictory features like being and non-being etc., to inhere simultaneously in one and the same object, just as (it is impossible for ) shadow and heat to exist in one and the same place ".
