I am reporting to you JAINA's activities and achievements for the period since the last issue. The JAINA Executive Committee is dedicated to enhance your Society's Jain activities. We welcome your constructive input at anytime. You may send me an e-mail at president@jaina.org. • JAINA Convention at Cincinnati is not too far now. It Starts on July 3, 2003. If you have
not registered, please do so as soon as you can as the fees will go up on April 16, 2003. You can register on line at www.jainaconvention.com, The newly revised Pathshala books wil be unveiled and sold at this convention. The registration fees is not sufficient to cover convention expenses. I request all of you to consider donating to the convention funds.
On Feb. 2 keys to 250 newly built homes in VARDHAMAN NAGAR for resettlement of earthquake affected families in Bhuj were handed over. Gurudev Shree Chitrabhanuji. Blessed the new owners. Hon. Governor of Gujrat Shree Sundersinh Bhandar unveiled the marble plaque naming JAINA, Jain Center of America and India Earthquake relief orgnanizations of Michigan at the entrance of Vardhaman Nagar. This was truly a proud moment in JAINA'S history and I wish to congratulate Dr. Dhiraj Shah, our Past President for shepharding such a large humanitarian project over the last two years. For more details, see the feature article in the inside pages Four Medical Camps were held in India during Jan. and Feb. 2003 done in Bidada Kutch, Rajkot and Disa in Gujarat and in Sagar Madhya Pradesh. The North American team of Drs. led by Dr. Manibhai Mehta and Dr. Mahendra Pandya, our past presidents. JAINA JNF (Jain Network Forum) is in full swing now. This is the on JAINA website www.jaina.org., a place where an young Jain visits another young Jain for friendship, matrimonial or for many other relationship. The JNF database contains all JNF/MIS(Marriage Information Services) candidates from conventions like JAINA, YJA and YJP. Candidates can search the database of more than 500 plus candidates providing personal profile, activities, and future plans with their pictures. Any Jain member can register by sending annual dues of $30 and personal details form. JAINA Yatra to Samet Shikherji and the surrounding places was completed successfully and all members were very satisfied with the management by Dilip V. Shah. Along with Yatra the group visited opening of the Jain school in Lachhwar (Birth place of Lord Mahavir) paid for by JAINA member donations. The yatris have donated good sums towards support of these school children. A sum of US$250 makes up for support of one child for three years. We have revised completely our mailing list starting with the last issue. We added about
1500 more members. I thank all the societies for in their society's current membership list. If we missed any member, please contact JAINA head quarter. We issued a pullout copy of JAINA at a Glance in December issue. Please detach it and use it. This is an opinion poll for medical doctors. We want to set up medical services for needy Jains in the USA on the web. I want you to respond if you are interested. If so, how would you set up the organization? JAINA AWARDS
JAINA gives out awards at every convention to recognize the individuals who have contributed significantly in line with the principles of Jainism. Three types of awards to be issued and their numbers are as follows:
1. JAINA Ratna (1)
2. JAINA Adult Recognition Awards (10)
3. JAINA Youth Recognition Awards (5)
The awards will depend upon the criteria shown below. We request individuals and Jain Centers to nominate those who meet these criteria by filling out a nomination form available from Kamlesh Amin. Please return the form with the supporting documents to the JAINA Headquarters, P.O.Box 700, Getzville, NY 14068 before April 15th, 2003. The committee consisting of Anop Vora (Chairman), Dr. Dilip T. Shah (Vice Chairman), Dr. Mahendra Mehta, Dr. Parveen Jain, and Ms. Suchita Shah will review the nominations and make the selections. Any living and practicing Jain residing in North America is eligible for any of these awards.

1. Use of time and/or personal financial resources for JAINA. Creative programs to meet the needs of member societies of JAINA. 2. Demonstrate large contribution of time and/or money for the local Jain Society.

TRIUMPH OF HUMAN SPIRIT OVER NATURE'S FURY VARDHMAN NAGAR AND JAINA
History will record February 2, 2003 as a golden day for people of Bhuj and JAINA, for on that day, JAINA fulfilled a pledge by delivering keys to 250 newly built homes to victims of the devastating earthquake on January 26,2001. The earthquake left 30,000 dead, 300,000 injured and 3 million people homeless. Devastation of Bhuj by the earthquake cannot be measured by the number of deaths or the number of collapsed buildings. The rubble from the destroyed homes, schools, hospitals,
movie theaters, government offices, all merged with each other in mountains that were aweful to look at. Thousands of dreams were piled on top of those bricks and mortar hills waiting to be carted away. Those who had lost everything were consoling others who had lost even more. People from all over the world rushed in will

all the goodwill and gifts. Military personnel arrived to maintain law and order while eerie silence persisted. The government promised help in rebuilding and no one took solace from those pronouncements. Those promises are still unfulfilled. Hundreds of thousands of families are still living in tents or temporary one room aluminum houses.
JAINA started a fund to help the victims of the earthquake. Jains in the US and Canada gave generously without even know

ing how the help will be sent. The first JAINA delegation reached Kutch within days of the disaster with relief supplies and surveyed the damage. For months, the authorities kept making statements as to how the government help would be delivered. A maze of guidelines and policy statements often confusing, other times contradictory, all had to be digested. To this date, no building

sued within the city limits of Bhuj. The grand design by the town planners is still "work in progress". After many more visits by members of the World Community Service of JAINA, a real plan of action was created and Dr. Dhiraj Shah was appointed as the Project Manager. Fortunately, Jains of Bhuj and JAINA got together and decided to build a new town, 4 miles outside of Bhuj. It will have 1,125 homes and other amenities. JAINA did
not just raise the money but was involved from the beginning in acquiring the 70 acre land; planning, obtaining government blessings, permits and help in infrastructure (roads, water supply, electricity and sewer
lines). Criteria to help individual families had to be worked out keeping in mind losses of each family - loss of earning member - economic losses-physically handicapped- widows with childrenold aged couples who did not have family members to support and no source of income etc. Streamlining of grants from government and arranging for loans from banks. All these matters had to be resolved amicably and quickly so that actual construction could begin. Dhirajbhai made many trips, wrote letters and called upon all his resources for the project.

· JAINA is donating Rs 2,51,00,000 (Two Crorers and fifty one lac Rupees) for the Nagar project. The financial help from JAINA went only to the 250 families who were classified as low income families. Other 875 families will benefit from the hospital, dental clinic, primary and secondary school, a science center, a computer center, community prayer hall and the library.
Seven thousand people attended the key handing over ceremony by Governor of Gujarat Shree Sundersinh Bhandari who was the chief guest of the day. A member of parliament and many state and local elected officials were also present. Gurudev
Shree Chitrabhanuji was the special invited guest who blessed all the new owners and talked of the duty of the privileged ones to help the needy. In addition to Dhirajbhai, JAINA was represented by Pramodaben Chitrabhanu, Lataben Champsee - regional Vice President, Bachubhai Ajmera Chairman of World Community Service and Dilip V Shah, Chairman of the Pilgrimage Committee.
Dhirajbhai spoke at the ceremony detailing the role JAINA played in the building of Vardhman Nagar and detailed past humanitarian projects carried out by JAINA not only in India but all over the world. He spoke about the earthquake affected Morbi- MaliaMiyana where Jaina has built primary school in Sumtinagar as well as in Samkhiali near Bhachau and donation to Rajkot Blood Bank of 400 beds and 400 wheel chairs. He ended his remarks by saying that in providing this help, Jains overseas are only paying interest on the investment made by the motherland in educating them.
After the key handing over ceremony, Lataben Champsee of Toronto Canada laid the foundation stone for the school that will be built on the site. As you know, Jain Society of Houston presented a check of Rs. 11,90000/- to Vardhman Nagar Association, for Dental Clinic on Feb.2.2003 in presence of Governor Sundersinh Bhandari. The groundbreaking ceremony of this was carried out by Mr. Bachubhai Ajmera, Chairman of WCS. This

Kantibhai Shah, President of Vardhman Nagar Owners Association thanked everyone for coming and reminded everyone of the need to continue to work together as only thirty five percent of the work is finished and a lot remains to be done. Lastly he
invited everyone for Swamivatsalya lunch. Joy was the order of the day as people lined up to shake hands of the proud new owners of homes.
The next day, thirty five more families from BHUJ were identified as needing help in getting homes. They approached Gurudev Chitrabhanuji with their request for assistance. After listening to their plight, Gurudev was the first one to contribute for this additional project and asked JAINA to see if they can be accommodated too. After consultation with other committee members, JAINA has indeed agreed to help these families too. They will have to be settled few miles away from Vardhman Nagar under the supervision of Bidada Sarvoday Trust as all the homes in Vardhaman Nagar have been allocated.
You and me can't bring back those who left this world because of this massive natural calamity, but let us continue to help those who are fighting for survival. As Jains, we can do no less. JAINA thanks all the Sanghs and individuals who donated generously as well as many Sanghs and the individuals who have carried out Gujarat earthquake relief work independently.

LACHHWAD ON OUR MIND
Lachhwad is the town where our Kshatriyakund Teerth is located. Over two thousand years ago, Bhadrabahu Swami gave a vivid and detailed description of Kshatriyakund in the Kalp Sutra. This is the land of Shri Mahaveer Swami's Janma and Diksha Kalyanaks. It was a capital city during the reign of King Siddharth. This land of three kalyanaks of our last Teerthankar is one of the poorest towns in Bihar today. Yatris on Pilgrimage of Shree Samet Sikharji try to include pilgrimage of Kshatriyakund but many are afraid to go to Lachhwad because of the unfounded fears of being robbed or killed. But it is true that there are no Jain families living in Lachhwad today. Most of the population is known as Adiwasis and they are Non Vegetarians. Message of Mahaveer in the land of Mahaveer is all but forgotten.
Until last year, our Temple and Dharamsala were the only brick and mortar building in Lachhwad. There are no industries, hospitals or any kind of job opportunities. The only available income in town was cutting wood from the trees on the mountain or from pilgrims. Doliwalas make about two to three thousand rupees a year if they are lucky. Kids earn from begging. Most kids do not attend school. The cycle of poverty will keep rolling on and on from one generation to the next without any hopes of better days. JAINA Yatris of 2001 Pilgrimage visited the only school in town and were moved by the horrible conditions in which the kids were studying. The school had no roof. Students would stand under the tree during rains. Our Yatris decided to do something. Fortunately on their next stop at Veerayatan, Acharya Shree Chandanaji agreed to build a school with the JAINA support. Within 5 days of that understanding between JAINA and Veerayatan, someone in Lachhwad donated the land for the school!
Two years later, this January, the 2003 JAINA pilgrims got to visit the new Teerhankar Mahaveer Vidyalay built and run by Veerayatan. The school with ten classrooms and 150 students is nothing short of miracle created in just 18 months. It is still a work in progress. Concrete columns rising from the terrace and construction crews are unmistakable signs of more good things to come. By May 2003, three hundred more students will be added. Some of our Yatris had tears in their eyes as they heard the young ones in uniforms recite Navakar Mantra and other devotional songs.

The school is operational but it is in dire need of help. The fifty Rupees fee per month pays less than twenty five percent of the cost of running the school and most parents in that town can not even afford the fee, the cost of uniforms or the school supplies. The Pilgrimage Committee and the Teerthodhhar Committee of JAINA are working together to support this school and in a sense become Teerth Rakshak of Lachhwad. Yatris of 2001 Pilgrimage were the catalyst for this project.
2003 Yatris have also done their part. One couple has committed $5,000 to purchase the adjacent land parcel that will be used as a playground and for future expansion. Another Yatri has pledged computers and sewing machines for the students. In exchange for schooling costs of their children, all fourteen karmacharis of our Dharmasala pledged to become vegetarian. For the next school year beginning in May, we decided to grant one hundred scholarships of $250 each for the needy students of Lachhwad that will last three years and cover tuition, uniforms and school supplies. Our Yatris have pledged 40 scholarships and will help raise the remaining scholarships. Half of the $250 from each scholarship will go towards supporting the child and the other half will be awarded to school to lessen their deficit. The three year scholarships are need based and will continue even if the child does not do well. The scholarship program will be administered in USA by Niyati Sheth of Edmond, OK and Nik Daftary of Waco, TX
We at the Pilgrimage Committee and the Tirthodhhar Committee of JAINA are convinced that this school will bring lots of good things to our Teerthbhoomi. Every Doliwala, or town person we came in contact with in Lachhwad appealed our Yatris to get their children admitted into the "American School". Imagine what your $250 will do. For less than twenty-five cents per day, a child will be educated, obtain Jain Samskar and one day break out of the cycle of poverty. Jain pilgrims will be seen in the town not as targets but as benefactors of the town. What can Jains or JAINA do in India that can have more profound impact than educating the poor? Vidya Daan lasts a lifetime!

A Passage to the Gods: Siddhachalam to Shikharji
The evening before boarding the plane at JFK airport in New York, my wife Sarla and I visited the Siddhachalam temple to seek blessings for a successful pilgrimage with an intensive itinerary put together by the JAINA Pilgrimage Committee. There are 120 sacred sites associated with the 24 Jain Tirthankars. The location of 21 sites is not clearly known or extinct. This pilgrimage covered 91 out of the possible 99 sites.
Forty-seven yatris gathered at Siddhartha Hotel on January 18, 2003 in a fog-ridden New Delhi amidst the coldest winter of the last 40 years. This was truly an International Sangh comprising of American, Canadian and one U.K. citizen. In the afternoon, the yatra started with a warm welcome as well as a send off arranged by the Delhi Jain Samaj (DJS).
On second day we took a 100 Km. bus trip from Delhi to Hastinapur, the site of 12 sacred events of Lord Shantinath, Kunthunath and Arnathas well as the legendary capital of the Mahabharata epic. The Jambu Dvipa shrine is very inspiring. Rekhaben Gandhi doing varsitapa laid a brick in the huge replica of Astapada Mountain under construction. After an overnight stay at the Hotel in Meerut and a visit to a local temple, we traveled 165 Km. to Aligarh where a new pilgrimage complex inspired by Shri Kanjiswami was nearing completion. After an overnight stay at the Agra Palace hotel, the Tuesday trip included Shouryapuri, the birthplace of Lord Neminath and the famous Taj Mahal On Wednesday, we reached Ratnapuri and we saw the site of Dharamnath Swami.
On January 23rd, the sixth day, we went to Ayodhya, the sites of 19 Kalyanaks, the most after Shikharji; as well as the Janma bhoomi of Bhagwan Rama. These sacred sites are associated with Tirthankars Adinath, Ajitnath, Abhinandanswami, Sumatinath and Anantnath. After visiting the Adinath temple, some of us chose to skip lunch to visit the other four sites by auto rickshaw which are managed by the Adinath Temple trust, as well as the Ram Janma Bhoomi.
After overnight at the Taj Ganges Hotel in Varanasi, we went to Bhelpur, the birth place of Lord Parshwanath. The next stop of Bhadaini is the birth place of Lord Suparswanath on the river Ganges and that location is called Jain Ghat. We visited Parswanath Vidyapeeth associated with the Benaras Hindu University which has produced over 150 publications and 60 scholars of Jainism. We met the two graduates who were the recent recipient of JAINA scholarships funded by 2001 JAINA yatris. Then we went to Chandrapuri and Sinhpuri, the sites of Chandaprabhu and Sreyansnathswami kalyanaks. Late in the evening we drove to Sarnath and visited the Digambara temple.

In the evening we boarded our train onward to Gomoh and then by bus to Rujuvalika where Lord Mahavir attained kevalgyan under the Shal tree on a river bank.
On January 26th, we rented a doli, put a tricolor flag on it and started the pahad yatra of Shikharji at 4:30 A. M. We went to all tonks (holy spots) including the remote Chandaprabhu tonk and the steep as well the highest Parswanath tonk. I heard someone asking why our Tirthankars came to Shikharji for Nirvana in such remote and steep hills. I looked around and the peaceful and blissful air gave the answer. Next morning we visited the temples of Shikharji, witnessed the regional poverty and questioned the wisdom of pumping wealth in to the temples instead of compassion activities. We drove to the train station and left for Bhagalpur.
On Tuesday, January 28th, we visited Champapuri associated with Vasupujyaswami, the only site of all five kalyanaks of a Tirthankar. After night at the Lachhwad Dharamshala, we visited the Tirthankar Mahavir Vidya Mandir, a school adopted and created by the efforts of 2001 JAINA Yatra Sangh and operated by Veerayatan. In the afternoon we climbed the hills of nearby Ksatriyakund, the site of Janma and Diksha Chyavana of Lord Mahavir.
On Thursday, January 30th, we made a trip to the remote village of Kakandi, the site of four sacred events of Suvidhinathji. In the afternoon, we visited the temples of Guniyaji and the famous Jalmandir of Pawapuri, the site of lord Mahavir's Nirvana. The view around the sunset was breathtaking. Late that evening we reached the temple of Kundalpur and then went to Veerayatan in Rajgiri for a three night stay.
On Friday, we climbed the fifth hill of Rajgiri, visited local temples by tongas and enjoyed the modern buildings and museum of Veerayatan. Rajgiri is a pilgrimage place for Jains, Hindus and Buddhists and is reverently mentioned in Ramayana as well as in Mahabharata. In the afternoon we visited the ruins of Nalanda, an ancient 5th century University. Invaded, destroyed and rebuilt several times, we saw the remains of the main Stupa, stair cases, dorms, rooms and terraces. It is believed that this is the only area where both Mahavir and Buddha spent quite some time, even though they did not meet each other.
On Saturday we went by bus to Bodhgaya. Here Prince Siddharth attained enlightenment under a Peepal Tree and became the Buddha. We visited the beautiful Mahabodhi Temple, the successor of the original Bodhi Tree, the footprints of Buddha, the stupas, the Thai Temple with gold lacquered tiles, a monastery, as well as the 80 feet high statue of Lord Buddha in Dhyana Mudra. JAINA HUMANITARIAN WORK GETS MOMENTUM IN INDIA THROUGH WHEELS OF HOPE-MEDICAL PROGRAM!
During month of Dec and January, Ramesh Shah, Director of WoH made a visit to India to analyze and observe firsthand the impact of last two (2) years of shipping medical equipment and supplies to various hospitals and clinics. WoH did visit number of places in Gujarat. Following is the summary:
RAJKOT:
Dhiarajbhai and I were guests at Medical BUS "Keys and Title Handing" over ceremony at "LIFE" Building in presence of more than 100 guests. WoH has started supplying medical equipment and supplies through Rajkot Blood Bank. Also we visited Young Star Blood Bank and Rajkot Voluntary Blood Bank and offered them Blood Centrifuge Machines and Refrigerator. Blood Bank has printed beautiful and artistic 4 page brochures with Photos for WoH.

⚫ VADODARA: I was invited at Inauguration Ceremony of Diagnostic Center at Premdas Jalaram Hospital. WoH has supplied CT Scan Machine, X-ray Machine and Mammogram Machine to help them to start this center. WoH also visited United Way of Baroda to establish the relationship to help 30 more Non-Government Organizations (NGO's) through them. DISA: With help of our President Bipinbhai, W.o.H has been instrumental to start a medical camp for 2 days. Dr. Manibhai Mehta and Dr. Dinesh Shah along with USA volunteers provided badly needed medical services.

BOMBAY: I met the board of trustees of Hira-Mongi Navneet Hospital run by Pragati Foundation. This is a brand new hospital with 160 beds located in Mulund having state of art physical and medical facility. They have requested W.o.H.
help in locating expensive medical equipment through donations in USA so they can save crores of rupees in start-up costs.
Lion Tara Bapas Hospital in Sion already started using all our beds and mattresses and asked for more surgical and lab supplies. ⚫
SHRAMA YATRA-II: 10 youth from YJA worked at Veerayatan at Bhuj in administrative capacity helping Sadhvi Shri Shilapiji and 3 worked at BIDADA 29th Medical Camp. Also. They did "Vruksha Ropan" (Tree Planting) at Community Center of Vardhamannagar project outside Bhuj.
BIDADA,Kutch: W.o.H. donated eye lenses and more wheel chairs for 29th Medical camp. They
are planning to send Mukesh Doshi, their Prosthetist and Orthotist consultant to USA in July to select the equipment for their newly built Rehabilitation Center.

Jain Dictionary: The task of defining simplified and unified approach of spelling of Jain words may also take some time. So far we have collected about 3000 Jain words into a custom Jain dictionary and grouped them into six groups. I will review these words with scholars in Ahmedabad and finalize the first phase of simplified spellings.

Young Jains of America (YJA) has had a tremendous six months! With the support of wonderful parents, hard-working volunteers, and dedicated board members, YJA continues to grow. In the past six months, YJA has hosted 6 Regional Conferences, sent 10 youth to India to assist in community service, and added more resources to it website. In the next six months, YJA will continue to expand grassroots organizations, select the Host City for YJA Convention 2004, and team up with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for those less fortunate.
With over three hundred youth from all over North America participating, "Regional Fest" was a huge success! YJA kicked off “Regional Fest,” six regional conferences in six months, this past Thanksgiving in Houston. The regional conferences continued onto Los Angeles and Toronto during Christmas Break and Chicago and Atlanta during Martin Luther King Holiday. "Regional Fest" finally concluded in Easton, PA this past March 7th. "The conference really helped youth get to know each other and learn Jainism on a more intimate level," exclaimed Chintan Shah, former Co-Chairperson of YJA and attendee of the Midwest Conference.
On December 25th, ten youth embarked on a spiritually fulfilling journey with YJA in Bhuj (Kutch), India. These youth spent two weeks with Veerayatan, an international community service organization founded by Acharaya Shri Chandanaji, to help those impoverished. Some of the projects included creating video documentaries, building architectural layouts for educational institutions, and teaching the youth. These youth made a difference in the lives of those less fortunate from our homeland while also learning about the importance of community service.
The road to YJA Convention 2004 begins now! YJA is now accepting bid packets from potential host cities for the next convention. A YJA Youth Convention requires a year of solid work, a core group of volunteers, and a supportive community, but the culmination of the hard work and the amount of knowledge spread is immeasurable. If you are interested in becoming a host city, please email chairs@yja.org. The deadline for bid packet submission is May 18"
YJA has several ways for youth to get involved. Currently, YJA is accepting applications for Young Jains of America Advisory Convention Committee (YJAACC), an executive of 5 board members that will supervise, assist, and provide creativity to the Host City Convention Committee for YJA Convention 2004. ADA REGIONAL FEST 2002/2003!!
YJA brought 6 Regional Conferences to all 6 Regions!
South Regional Conference The South Regional Conference, Jain Philosophy vs. the Theroies of Science was held in Houston, TX Friday, November 29 - Sunday December 2, 2002. About 30 youth from Dallas and Houston gathered at the Jain Center of Houston on Friday evening, starting the weekend off with icebreakers and games. On Saturday, they woke up early in order to begin the day with yoga. Following this, the Houston youth group presented on Navakaar Mantra. There guest speakers, the Samanjis, next gave a lecture on the "Life of a Shravak." The Dallas group then performed a skit "How the Chor Stole Diwali" followed by a discussion on whether we how Jainism is affected by the changing times. The youth enjoyed a night of bowling and hanging out with their new friends. Sunday morning, the attendees mediated together, and then said their final goodbyes after an awesome weekend.
West Regional Conference
DESTINATION: MOKSHA, the West Regional Conference, was held in Anaheim California from December 20-22, 2002. Almost 70 youth from LA, San Francisco, San Diego, and even as far as Phoenix attended the conference.OnFriday night, the attendees played trust games, so the attendees got to know one another. The attendees spent the next day engaging in interactive discussions and participating in sessions led by local youth groups of LA and San Diego. The purpose of these sessions were to show the attendees how they could implement Jainism into their daily live. Saturday night, the youth danced the night away at a semi formal dance. Finally, Sunday morning, the youth attended a panel discussion led by older Jain youth, and a session led by a local pathshala teacher about Frequently asked Jain Questions. The attendees left on Sunday evening with almost 70 new friends, and more importantly a new understanding of Jainism.
Northeast Regional Conference
On December 21, 2002, 50 youth gathered in Toronto, ONT, for the first ever regional gathering of the Northeast Region. The theme for the weekend was Diversity the Jain Way, selected in order to give attendees an understanding of Jainis. One of the main focuses for the weekend was the concept of Anekantvaad. The youth came out better understanding how to be tolerant and compassionate. Sessions were conducted by Balbhadraji, Dr. Anne Valley, Dr. Vastupal Parikh, and many others. Friday nightwas the Indian Mela Night, where attendees learned about the many cultural aspects of India. Also, the youth did traditional raas-garba and also danced the night away at the semi formal. A special visit to the Royal Ontario Museum was also coordinated, in order to see the Jain Art exihibit. The weekend was memorable for all that attended. The youth left, not only with souvenirs, but with knowledge of Jainism that will remember forever.
Midwest Regional Conference
Approximately 30 youth gathered on January 17th, 2003 in Chicago, IL for the second Midwest Regional Conference. Attendees came from Detroit, Ohio, and Chicago. The theme was, Jainism and Science, and youth enjoyed sessions on Animal Testing, Veganism, and Jainism vs. Science. The youth spent the weekend openly expressing their views on these current issues, and in the end came to a solution about their lives. Open forum discussions were held by their peers, so everyone was able to share their thoughts. The youth also attended a yoga session and a session on How to do Darshan, in order to show the practical side of Jainism. The weekend was also filled with icebreakers, allowing for everyone to meet one another. On Saturday Night, the youth enjoyed a night of bowling and games. The youth were sad to leave on Sunday, but glad they had come.

Southeast Regional Conference
Atlanta, GA was the site for the Southeast Regional Conference. Close to 70 youth gathered from January 17th-19th, 2003 in order to learn about the Dual Identity Crisis: Philosophy vs. Science. The conference kicked off with Friday night activities of icebreakers. Yoga was conducted early Saturday morning, and all day youth enjoyed a diverse array of sessions led by Manoj Jain, Pravin Shah, and many local speakers. Saturday Night, the youth enjoyed a formal dinner and dance. Sunday afternoon concluded the conference with a final session led by Jina Shah, a speech by Manoj Jain, and a slideshow of the weekends pictures. The youth of the Southeast truly bondeded at the conference and left with a better understanding of Jainism and how it should fit into their everyday lives.

In December of 2002, YJA sent 10 dedicated youth to Bhuj, India to volunteer with Veerayatan, an international organization founded by Acharaya Shri Chandanaji for the purpose of providing service to those who need it. The volunteers flew to the Gujurat Earthquake affected site on December 25th and continued their service until January 10th. Veerayatan's efforts are largely educational in Bhuj. The youth assisted in several significant ways: building architectural layouths, creating video documentaries, creating informational brochures, and implementing guildelines for acceptance into the school. The volunteers returned to the States in mid-January, overjoyed they made a significant difference in the lives of others and humbled of how fortunate their lives are. YJA Exec Meets in Detroit
On January 2nd, 2003, YJA Executive Board gathered in Detroit for a four day meeting. The meeting started late Thursday night. and continued non-stop until Sunday afternoon. The board laid out an ambitious agenda for the next six months. Excited by the work of the last six months, feverishly worked throughout the entire meeting. Goals accomplished over the weekend included plans for YJA Convention 2004, H4H, Regional Projects, and Website additions. After four demanding days, the board members went their separate ways, ready to put their all in for the next six months.

YOUNG JAIN PROFESSIONALS (YJP)
Who are we?
YJP is a network of young Jain professionals whose mission is to increase the awareness and understanding of Jain principles
and heritage by promoting networking among Jain professionals. Our objectives are:
To raise awareness of Jain principles through educational and interactive discussions
To promote the application of Jainism in the professional and social aspects of our lives To provide opportunities for leadership development
To facilitate peer networking
To engage in community service at our events and promote personal involvement in community service
To provide mentorship to younger Jains, and collaborate with YJA and other Jain organizations to promote Jain ideals Past
YJP started as a nascent organization to cater to Jain professionals who have different needs, interests, and challenges. The conventions have given attendees an opportunity to learn about Jainism, its impact on our everyday lives, and to network with other Jain professionals. Our past events include:
