How did the prince Subāhu, O Reverend Sir! obtain, get and acquire such an excellent human prosperity, and who was he in his previous birth? The Samana answered: " Truly, O Goyama at that time and at that period there was a city named Hatthinaura in the country of Bhāraha in this very continent of Jambuddiva which was prosperous, well-protected and happy. In that city of Hatthinaura there dwelt a house. holder named Sumuha who was rich and prosperous.. At that time and at that period an elderly monk named Dhammaghosa who was possessed of the knowledge of previous life-jātismarana (here the rest is to be supplied § 1, down to) who was surrounded by five hundred houseless monks in successive order and who was wandering on religious visits from place to place, arrived at the city of 122
