54 214. Gosala,, on learning that Saddalaputta Fas converted to Jainism by Mabāvira, comes to him with the idea of reconverting him to the Ājivika view; bat finding saddālaputta firm in his new faith and in different to Gosala, began apparently to praise Mahavira.
56. 218. महागौवे, महागोपः; Mahavira is called the -great cow-keeper or guardian because he leads direotly or by his own hand (साहात्य, स्वहस्तेनैव ) to the great cow. fold (महावाड) of Nirvana the beings that are lost and bowildered in the forest of FATT. Mahāvīra is again called महासत्थवाह, a great guide, महाधम्मकही, a great preacher and महानिजामअ, a great pilot, as he saves beings from the ocean of fit and takes them to Nirvana. Note the appropriate terms in which the details are given. (i) धम्ममएणं दण्डेणं...संगोवेमाणे निव्वाणमहावार्ड; (i) धम्ममपणं पन्थेणं...निन्वाणमहापट्टणाभिमुहे; (ii) उम्मग्गपडिवन्ने...मिच्छत्तवलामिभूए...चाउरन्ताओं संसारकन्ताराओ; (iv) संसारमहासमुद्दे...बुड्डमाणे निवुड्डमाणे उप्पियमाणे धम्ममईए नावाए निव्वाणतोगभिमुहे. अहविहकम्त मपडलपडोच्छन्ने, obsoured with a cloak of pitchy darkness of eight kinds of.aots; Com. अष्टविधकमैव तमःपटलमन्धकारसमूहः तेन प्रत्यवच्छन्नान्. The eight kinds of aots are, (1) ज्ञानावरणीय, obsouring scquisition of knowledge; (2) दर्शनावरणीय, obsouring the acquisition of faith; (3) वेदनीय, -act giving the experience of pleasure or pain; (4) मोहनीय, act which deludes a man; (5) आयुष्य, aot which fixes the period of life; (6) नाम,aot which fixes the name in a particular life; (7) गोत्र, act which ixes the race or tamily; and (8) अन्तराय, aot which stands in the way of a person's attaining emancipation. चाउरन्ताओ संसारकन्ता
