The person who knows (munai in Prakrit means 'knows') is a monk. The state of knowing is monkhood, which is thus identical with knowledge and selfrestraint. Acharānga Cūrņi, p. 71 : ahavā atikamāsattassa iheva bhagamdaro amtavihimāti rogā ........ vātāti uppajjanti. Acharānga Vrtti, patra 113: kāmā duḥkhātmakā eva, tatra cãsaktasya dhātukşayabhagandarādayo rogāḥ samutpadyante. Acharānga Cūrņi, p. 72 : iha rogă adhikstā, tattha sammam rogissa kiriyam tāņam. Vrttau (Patra 116). ādānāya iti pātho vyäkyato sti. Prakaranasangatyā adanamiti upayuktamasti. atra adānameva dîrghikaraņād ädānamiti mantavyam. Food is essential for sustaining of life. The monk obtains his food from householders. Taking food can become both indulgence and renunciation depending on whether it has been obtained and consumed with feeling of attachment or aversion or without such feelings. The muni practicising self-discipline or renunciation should not, at the time of obtaining food, behave in an agitated manner. He should not frown upon nor should he criticize the donor.
