________________ THREE MAGADHI SUTRAS FOUND IN THE COMMETARY OF RAGHWVA ON SAKUNTALĀ [ Jagatram Bhattacharyya (Abhijñāna śākuntalam has attracted innumerable scholars through its versification, beauty of style, thought-content, grammar and from various other angles. Rāghavabhatta (1475-1500 A. D.) has written the commentary named Arthadyotanik on the Act Vi of Abhijñāna Sākuntalam wherein he has quoted sowe sūtars on māgadhi. At first it was a general opinion that the sūtars might be qouted from some standard prakrit grammar but on closer analysis the auther of this article found that they might be taken from some works which are not available today, -E ) The Text Ale kumbhilaā, kahehi kahim tue ese manibandha nukkinna námahee láa kilae arguliae samāśādie. Rāghavabhațța (1) 'äccākṣepe' iti māgadhyām Vararuci sūtreņa sambuddhāvakár adeśah. (2) 'rasor laśau' iti sūtreņa rephasya lo dantyasya tālavyaḥ, (3) ‘ata etsyāt' iti anena prathamaika vacanasyaikāraḥ. The other grammarians on the same : (i) adirghah sambuddhau-Vr. XI. 16 of Cowell's edition. (ii) ād-vākṣepe -pu. XII.30 (iii) āksepe ād vā -RT. 2.2.27 (iv) adyā ākṣepe --MK.XII.28 (v) a amantrye sau veno naḥ-- HC, (4.263), in the case of Sauraseni. āccākṣepe In order to justify the long ä in kumbhilaā in the vocative, Rāghava Bhatta (RBb) has quoted a sūtra accāksepe in the name of Vararuci (Vr.)_'accāksepe' iti māgadhyām Vararuci sūtrena sambudda Vākārādeśah. The simple meaning of this is that in the sense of con'empt ā is added to the end of a word ending in a-base. For example- kumbhilaka- kumbhīlaā. In our existing editions of Vr.'s prāksta Frakāśa', there is no sūtra like accākṣepe as quoted by R:Bh.
