safely conclude that Rcās 11 & 12 are later additions to Mandala 10, Sūkta 90. Mandala 10 itself, as is well known, was added to Ķgvedva in much later times. We can also conclude that the ‘varņa' system as we know it today is a much later development than original Řgveda. Ķcās 13 and 14 are given below for reference.

According to 14'h șcā - The antariksa (intermediate space between heaven and earth ) was created from novel, the broad sky (space) from head, earth for feet and all directions from ear.
From Paurāņic literature we also find:
a. Change of 'Brahmins to ruling class and vice-versa was common. Viśvāmitra, for example, was a ‘rājenya' who assumed the Brāhmanic role.
b. The anecdote about Paraśurāma (or Rāma - Jamadagnya of Viśvāmitra lineage) ridding the earth of ‘ksatriyas' twenty-one times.
From the above, it is clear that in those days the word “kșatriya' was used for a class of people who were ethnically distinct from the Vedic people and that the two groups were inimical to each other. This is confirmed when we look at the Jain mythology. They, the Jains, strongly believe that 'Tīrthankaras'or the emancipators of mankind could take birth only in a ‘Kșatriya' kula. They cannot take birth in a Brahmin family or a lower family." Herman Jacobi, in his 'Sacred Books of the East 8 translates thus.' ..It never has happened, nor does it happen, nor will it happen that Arhats ....be born of poor families...beggar families .. Brahmanical families .... "It is of interest to note that in this text, the words Vaisya or Śūdra do not find a
