1978. This is its revised edition prepared by Willem Bollee and Jayendra Soni containing three indices. The author has tried to put the essence of Jainism in a lucid way in the light of history, cosmology and cosmography. The book also gives an idea of what has been accomplished by western scholars during a period of about one hundred and fifty years. It is worthwhile for the libraries.

Professor P.S. Jaini, Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of California at Berkeley is a renowned scholar of both the streams of Jainism and Buddhism. He is best known for the Jain Path of Purification' published in 1979. This was followed in 1991 by Gender and Salvation and Jaina Debates on the spiritual liberation of women.
The present work is a collection of twenty one papers on various topics divided into six sections- i) Introduction of Jain faith, ii) Jain studies, iii) Some Aspects of Reality in Jainas Doctrine, iv) Some aspects of Karma theory, v) Jaina Ethics and Praxis, and vi) Jaina Purāņas. These papers covered a broader outlook of Jainism and humanity, Ahimsā, Reality, Rebirth, Sāmāyika etc. Prof. Jaini has dealt these topics with his full gravity of scholarship.
