but also very interesting, which are assembled in the other sections. Besides philological researches which deal with the examination of unknown texts (e.g. "Poetical Biography of Śri Vijaya Dharma Sūri," pp. 198-213; the Sajjhā and Stuti in Old Gujarati p. 275 ff., etc); one can read general or comprehensive essays which, it should be noted, are written from the insider's viewpoint ("The Kaleidoscope of Jaina Wisdom", "An Interpretation of Jaina Ethics", "The Heritage of the Last Arhat," pp. 3-86); and there are also articles which make assertions that cannot please everybody (such as the one about the stifling atmosphere of the caste system which, according to the author, the Jaina in the present times; "The Social Atmosphere of Present Jainism", pp. 93-104, the same in Hindi version, pp. 263-272). The Introduction by Prof. Sagarmal Jain (pp. ix-xxi), well known for his works on Jaina Philosophy, recalls the personality of Charlotte Krause (whom he knew personally) and is, at the same time, a lucid presentation and critique of the works reproduced in the book; nor does it evade the questions, even difficult questions, raised in the life sketch. It allows the reader to have a balanced view of the collected works which are presented here.
Despite a few printing mistakes here and there (the book is entirely recomposed, the articles are not reproduced mechanically), the printing and layout of this book are excellent and pleasing. The paper is of good quality. There is only one fault: if the place of publication and the original pagination of the articles had been indicated before each text, it would have been easier and without much difficulty to locate the references. This inconvenience could have been avoided, for instance, by indicating the original page numbers in bold square brackets. Be that as it may, one fervently hopes that the Pārsvanātha Vidyāpītha, the Jaina Institute whose recent publications are of increasingly high quality, or some other Indian publisher takes up the publication of similar works which are unfortunately not well known and make them accessible to scholars of Indian Studies.
