the occupation of the .Orissa Saraks, who are often known as Saraki tanti. There are four main settlements in Orissa, viz ; in the Tigiria and Barmba States, in the Banki thana' in Cuttack and in Pipli thana in Puri. The Puri saraks have lost all connection with the others and do not intermarry with them. Though they are not served by Brabmans, they call themselves Hindus. They have no traditions regarding their origin, but like other Saraks are strict vegetarians. The Suraks assemble once a year ( on the Magh Siiptami ) at the celebrated cave temples of Khandagiri to offer homage to the idols there and to confer on religious matters. ___ अर्थात्-सराक एक अति प्राचीन जातियोंमें से है जिसके सम्बन्धमें मि० गेट सन् १९०१ ई. की बङ्गाल सेन्सस रिपोर्टमें कहते हैं—“यह निश्चय है कि सराक शब्दकी उत्पत्ति श्रावक शब्दसे है जिसका अर्थ संस्कृत भाषामें "सुननेवाला" होता है जैनोंमें श्रावक उनको कहते हैं जो यति व मुनियों से भिन्न हैं, अर्थात् गृहस्थ हैं। यहां बहुत से सराक बसे हुए हैं। समय पाकर ये लोग अपनी जीविका निर्वाहके लिये कपड़े आदि बुनने लगे हैं और अब ये सराकी तांती कहलाते हैं। खासकर ये लोग यहां ( उड़ीसा ) ताइगिरिया राज्य,
