________________ The Psychology of Enlightenment NOTE: In this text, the mantra sohum has been written phonetically to make it less confusing to the reader. The vowel in hum is actually a short a which sounds like u in the English sum. Consonants: The h following a consonant is audibly and separately pronounced. For example, the name of the first center, mulādhāra, is pronounced mu·la.d.hā.ra. The same rule applies for the combination th. In other words, th in Sanskrit is not pronounced as in the English think. For example, the name of the second center is swādhisthāna, pronounced swad.his.t.hā.na. The hard g sound, as in good, is sometimes written as j, as in the name for the sixth center, ajnā, which is pronounced āgnā.
