Enhancing Religious Leadership

What are the newest challenges of religious leaders, and how do they compare with challenges that are longstanding? What should be the goals of religious leaders be? How might religious leaders be trained in light of the above? This is the third session of a three-day open space workshop, based on study materials prepared by a recent gathering of leading interreligious scholars. The session is geared to religious leaders or those in training to become one and is limited to 30 participants. Advanced registration is required, along with a commitment to participate in the entire series.
Alon Goshen-Gottstein is the director of the Elijah Interfaith Institute and director of the Centre for the Study of Rabbinic Thought, Beit Morasha College, both in Jerusalem. He was ordained a rabbi in 1977. Projects of the Elijah Interfaith Institute include the bi-annual meeting of the board of World Religious Leaders, the Educational Network, as well as the Jewish and the Muslim Theology of the Religious Other.

The Sacred Fire is a transcendental musical experience supported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the Australia Council for the Arts. Kim Cunio and Heather Lee bring the music of Hildegard of Bingen to life with a medieval and cross-cultural ensemble, including readings by eminent Australians. In the last decade, various recordings have showcased Hildegard's music, ranging from historically informed ensemble works to adventurous fusion recordings that combine the music with mod

ern sounds. The Sacred Fire is both historically faithful and musically adventurous, combining detailed musical research with innovation and experimentation. The ensemble plays medieval instruments from all cultures, including the Middle East and Persia. Newly composed pieces take fragments of Hildegard's music and combine them with Heather Lee's pure voice and a myriad of instruments including reed organs, the hurdy gurdy, the psaltery, the kamanche and more. Robin Ramsay and Stephanie Dowrick provide readings.

Dr Kim Cunio has studied with Australia's finest musicians. He is one of Australia's most accomplished researching composers and was awarded an Australian Broadcasting Company Golden Manuscript Award in 2004 in recognition of his work with traditional and Islamic music. Kim's work has been played around the world, including at the Olympic Games and the White House.
Heather Lee is an award-winning singer and soloist who has performed in many of the leading venues and companies of Australia, including the Victorian State Opera, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Sydney Opera House, and the Cameron Macintosh CATS tour of Australia and New Zealand. Heather has a rare ability to sing in many languages and styles and has focused on both sacred traditional music and sublime western classical music in her career.
The ensemble includes Dr Kim Cunio as director and on plucked strings. and voice; Heather Lee on vocals; international traditional string player Llew Kiek on plucked strings: Australia's traditional winds player Anne Hildyard on winds, percussion master Tunji Beier on percussion; and Australia's visionary author and teacher Dr Stephanie Dowrick reading.

Panel Discussion
Six speakers, all prominent Hindu swamis and leaders, will present on six distinct aspects of the future of Hinduism. They will discuss areas from their own experience and expertise that will illuminate the modern Hindu landscape from a broadly conceptual point of view. Subjects include the following: exploring the West's increasing adoption of Hindu ideas and ideals; the burgeoning of temple-building in the West and its impact on Hindu communities and non-Hindus; Hinduism in the mainstream media and on the Internet; Hindu education; the growing importance of Hindu advocacy and the defence of Hindu human rights; and growing up Hindu in the West. Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami, spiritual head of Kauai's Hindu Monastery in Hawaii, will chair the session and introduce each speaker.
HH Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami is the designated successor to Sivaya Subramuniyaswami of blessed memory. He was a Co-President of the 1993 Centenary Parliament of the World's Religions. H H Veylanswami is Guru Mahasiddhanam and 163rd preceptor of the 2,200-year-old Kailasa Parampara of the Nadinatha Sampradaya in the Saivite Hindu tradition. He is also the publisher of the international quarterly journal 'Hinduism Today'.
