________________ Mahavira & Doctrine of Karma / 71 5. Duration of Karma The duration of each type of karma differs according to its nature and fruition. The Jaina Texts distinguish three lengths of the period of duration-minimum duration, intermediate duration and maximum duration, The duration of intermediate category of each action varies according to its intensity and gravity. For knowledge obscuring karma, maximum duration is thirty kota-koti sagaropamas and minimum is one antramuhurta. Same duration is for perception obscuring. For feeling producing karma minimum duration is twelve muhurta and maximum duration is thirty kotakoti sagaropamas. For deluding karma-Minimum duration is one antramuhurta and maximum duration is seventy kotakoti sagaropamas. For age determining karma-Minimum duration is one antramulurta and maximum duration is thirty three sagarapames. For physique making karma--Minimum duration is eight muhurtas and Maximum duration is twenty kotakoti sagaropamas. The same is the status determining karma. For power obscuring karma, minimum duration is one antra muhurat and maximum duration is thirty kotikoti sagarapamas. Antramuhutra denotes a period of time from one to in between fortyeight minutes.
