________________ Mahavira & Meditation / 109 1. Concept of Environment Man is himself a living being, therefore he is a part and parcel of the environment. For man, the whole universe is an environment. One who pollutes the environment, endangers his own existence because he is inseparable from the environment. A threat to environment is a threat to humanity. Living and non-living beings have an effect on eachother. Land, water, air and fuel are the components of nature. If even one of them is disturbed, the balance of nature is disturbed. Living beings can exist only in the environment as it exists today, therefore if the balance is disturbed, existence of life will be threatened. The environment is dependent on its inhabitants and vice-versa. If balance of nature is disturbed, the balance of environment will be disturbed. The race to achieve fast growth is also responsible for ecological disturbances. Lack of proper education is responsible for the threat caused to ecology.
