The Pali suttas confirm good deal of what is contained in the Svetambara Jain canon. The ancient Jain sculptures of Mathura dating from the first century A.D. guarantee the antiquity and authenticity of many of the Jain tradition. It is generally believed that there were Jain monks before Mahavira belonging to the order founded by Pärivanätha. Nature of Chaityas mentioned in the ancient Bauddha and Jain texts.
