JAINA, as a part of its ongoing commitment to the progressive development of Jainism in North America, is once again sponsoring an essay competition. In keeping with JAINA's vision of helping youth to learn Jainism and acknowledging youth effort, an essay competition leads to reading, research and practicing Jainism. In addition, it will bring new ideas to surface from the following essay topic for 1998:
"Maintaining and Representing Our Religious and Cultural Identity as Jains in North America"
Guidelines. Include and expand on the following:
Why does Jainism fascinate me?
What am I doing to practice and represent Jainism today?
How would I expand practice and promote Jainism in future?
What obstacles I see and how I plan to overcome them? Be specific and detailed about the plan. Refer to and include specific Jain teachings and principles that are part of your thinking.

Judges:
Dr. Balbhadra Bruce Costain. Dr. Balbhadra has a Doctorate degree in Jainism and is practicing Jainism for many years. For the last fourteen years he has been an instrumental force in guiding Jain youths. Dr. Balbhadra has also received JAINA Ratna Award this past July. Dr. Chandrakant Parekh. Mr. Parekh has been a judge of many past essay contests. He is a regional editor of Jain Digest from the west coast. Dr. Dilip Shah. Dr. Shah is a regional vice president of Jaina from midwest. He is also one of the editors of Jain Darshan which is published in Chicago.
Submission Instructions:
Send your essay on a diskette (Word for Windows format, or ASCII text format) with a printed copy, postmarked no later than April 1, 1998. Include your name, address, age and phone number. Send to:

Process after submission:
Mr. Harendra Shah will code essays to conceal the identity of participants from the judges and send copies of essays to the judges by May 15. The judges will render their decision by July 1, 1998.
