communities. It will be observed that many incidents and details have been included upon doubtful authority. I can only reply that I give my authorities. Also, when one remembers that pirates were never looked upon as honourable enemies, it is natural that, whilst the depositions of their victims were exculpatory of their own carelessness or cowardice, they exaggerated the criminality of the freebooters; on the other hand, the depositions of captured pirates were always open to the suspicion which attaches to King's Evidence. Thus, except as regards the bare outlines and exact dates of events, official records are as untrustworthy as private accounts, whilst the latter are fuller, more human and more illuminating. We may, in short, be sure that tales of comtemporary piracy, even if untrue as to facts, were correct delineations of character and customs.
