________________ ixxvi THE INDIAN ANTIQUARY [CHAPTER VII 40; pushkar-âgurum, II 189 36; must-ôsira, II 137 33; vachâ-hingum, II 399 46; vilvâgnimantham, II 188 36; vêpâth-ûnmadan, II, 333 43; évâsa-kâsan, II 341 43; hikka-svâsê (for svasayoh), II 33 27. In the preceding instances; the gender is the normal neuter; but in bal-asvagandhâm, II 320 42, and yashṭimadhuka-manjishthâm, II 301 41 we have the feminine. Similarly, we find the masculine singular nand-Spanando (for nandópanandau) combined with the plural yê nâgâ. But the normal dual occurs equally frequently, e.g., chandrakantendranilayôh, II 300 41; jivak-arshabkakau, II 189 36 297 41; pippali-ringavêrabhyam 11 212 37; bal-âtibalayó, II 266 40; lâmajjaka-dhananjayau, II 294 41; vyósha-vatsakau, II 56 29. In most of the preceding examples, moreover, the minor grammatical rule that a briefer and vowel-initial member should stand first, and that one ending in a should be placed last (see W. Skr. Gr., §. 1254c, p. 429) is not observed. (b) Singular for plural; in sapta saptâham (for saptâhâ!), 11 956 70, and in the copulative compounds kâmalá-jvara-pândutvam, II 342 43; madhuka-mânjishthá-tagaram, II 266 40, with the normal neuter gender; but an instance with an abnormal feminine occurs in phalgu-karjiramridvikâm, II 187 36. (c) Dual for plural, only once, in patola-pichumanda-parpaṭakau (for parzaṭakaḥ, plur. masc., or parpaṭakam, sing. neut)., II 137 33; but the normal plural is usual, as in muktavidruma-sankhânâ, II 300 41; see also II 57 29, et passim. (d) Plural for dual; vrishanah (for vrishanau), III 47 183; also dadhyamblakâchikanām (for 'kâmchikayo!), II 313 42. (3) Absence of concord: (a) with respect to "number": thus, singular verb with plural noun, in II 767 60, samyuktaḥ sêvyamânâ...samu panamayet; in this case the plurals sanyuktâl and sêvyamânâ are erroneous, for the subject of the whole formula is the singular êsha prayogaḥ Again, in II 1066 74, yasya vis phôṭakâ gâtrê paridahas-cha lakshyatê (for lakshyante); but here the singular verb is due to the influence of the preceding singular noun paridâhah-On the other hand, plural verb with singular noun, in II 469 49, kâiasya mulai madhu-sanprayuktan... samayanti (for samayati); III 65 184, vidu vadanti (for vadati). So also, in IV 56 196, idan sthanam driiyanté (for driśyate).-Again, singular' verb with plurality of nouns; otten with syât; e.g., in II 78 30, syân mâtulungasya rasantriny-üsha nany-ambilavêtasan-cha; II 80 30, syâch-chitrakan trikaṭukam kustu mburuni...; II 472 50, lâjal, supishia vadurasthimajja syad-anjanam. In these examples the singular syât may be due to the attraction of the adjacent singular noun; for when the adjacent term happens to be plural, the plural syuk is used, as in II 467 49, tryushanan triphala...râsnâ cha sarvvê tulyah syuḥ. But more probably the term syât is used adverbially; and it is obviously so used, e.g., in II 182-3 35 and II 241 38, where it occurs with a series of nouns in the accusative case governed by the transitive verb dadyât. (b) With respect to gender: masculine with feminine, once, in II 275 40, bandhya labhate garbham samâcharan, for samacharanti which would not suit the metre (élóka). So also once, in IV 45 195, paribhrashtá (for paribhrashtal) samagraḥ.-Again, masculine with neuter; several times; in II 98 31, rôga-jâtâni tân (for tâni) árinu; II 185 36, arśamsi kshubdhân (for kshubdhâni) nihanti; 11 471 50, chûrnnâni madhudvitiyâ vinihamti (though in this case there is probably a clerical error for 'dvitiyâni nihanti); II 637 57, annam-iva kala-bhôjyaḥ (for bhôjyam); II 725 58, rasah bhôjyam (for bhojyaḥ); II 735 59, niyamas-cha yathâdrishta (for yathâ-drishtah); II 1111 76, sarkkarâ-madhu-sanyuktas (for samyuktam) trishnasamanam-uttamam, So also in V 61 207, kalas-tê samu pasthitam (for samupasthiteh).
