________________ (From Desi Nam Mala) O man, I warned you not to be proud for long, for the night would pass away in sleep, and dawn is on the horizon. GENERAL Here are the horses, here is the battle-field, here are the sharp swords, manliness or valour is tasted here when one does not turn back the reins of horses. Let there be a distance of a million miles between those that stand separated, for, my friend, one does not lose his affection for he who is the source of joy, yet only met but once in a hundred years O fool, countries are rendered beautiful not by rivers, nor by lakes, nor ponds, nor gardens or forests but by the stay of noble people. People take fruit from a tree but neglect the bitter leaves and yet the great tree like a noble man, places them on its lap (A chair is made from the wood) To whom is life not dear? Who does not wish for wealth; a noble man counts wealth and life as mere straws in the hours of difficulty. If you inquire about big houses, there they are, but behold my lover is in the hut here who helps people in distress. Use your bodies to the full, for they meet the same end when buried they stink, when burnt they turn to ashes. 1 Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only 170 www.jainelibrary.org
