He shall observe for life all the five vows himself, he will not abet their transgression, nor will he approve of their transgression by another. १२४ "This practical adoption of Jain discipline in daily conduct has almost been ignored. In practice, at the present time distinctive characteristics of a Jain consist of mere outward forms or external observances which entail no mental effort, such as drinking water which has been strained through cloth, refraining from taking meals after sun-set, abjuring root-vegetables or vegetables which grow under-ground, abstention from taking green vegetables on certain days of the week, performing worship in a temple, saying prayers, reading or hearing the sacred scriptures and telling the beads which are usually 108 in number.
