students( undergraduates and Post Graduates ) and full time professors and researchers from many universities and colleges around the world to India to give them intensive class room teaching and to show case the Jain community, its rich culture and living traditions to these scholars. Since 2005, more than 82 such Scholars have come to India and benefited by this program. This year the ISSJS program has expanded with the offering of three stand alone programs. The first one is a One month Long ISSJS at Mahidol; University, In Bangkok, Thailand with 17 Buddhist Scholars from several universities participating there. This program will start on 23rd April, 2009 at Mahidol university. ISSJS is taking several noted Jain Professors and Scholars from universities in India to Thailand, to teach these Buddhist scholars and create an environment and a forum for systematic study and research in Jainism and thus a dialogue between the two great religions of the world. This event is a historic one and was made possible by the vision of several Buddhist Scholars in Thailand who came to ISSJS in the past few years, by Shri Pramod Jain, Chairman, ISSJS Academic and Governing Council in Thailand and the Jain community in Bangkok. The second stand alone ISSJS program is a one month Long program in India starting on May 23rd, 2009 in New Delhi, In this program, 13 scholars are participating from several universities in USA and Canada. The third program is a Two month long ISSJS starting on June 1st, in New Delhi, In this program, 12 scholars from some famous universities in USA, Canada, U.K, Belgium, Switzerland and Thailand will be traveling to India. DR. PANKAJ JAIN TO TEACH ONLINE COURSES ON JAINISM AND SANSKRIT AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY - Dr. Pankaj Jain will teach two courses on Jainism and Sanskrit at North Carolina State University, where he teaches at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and also at the Department of Religion and Philosophy. Jain, who earlier taught Indian cultural subjects at Rutgers and other universities in
New Jersey, recently moved to North Carolina to take up a full-time teaching position at the university. Currently he teaches Indic traditions and ecology, Hindi films, Hindi language and literature: about half of the students are of South Asian heritage.
The course on Jainism is titled 'From Mahavira to Mahatma Gandhi: The Nonviolent Jain Traditions of India'. The topics include the origin and history of Jainism, Jain theology and philosophy, contemporary Jains, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and nonviolence today. 60-YEAR-OLD, PARASMAL JAIN APPEARS FOR CLASS 10 EXAMS BANGALORE: A 60-year-old man appeared for matriculation exams in the city. Defying age, he pursued his educational career rubbing shoulders with students of his grandchildren's age. Parasmal Jain had to leave his studies in between on account of some family problems. He has set an example by going back to his studies at an age when elderly people detach themselves from materialistic world. For this cloth merchant, it was a big decision to pursue studies and realise his childhood desire of completing his education. "I always wanted to study, but could not complete my education because of some family problems. I got my children educated and when they got settled, then I thought of realizing my dream and decided to pursue my studies further," said Jain. Jain was supported by his family in his quest for learning and planned to study further till his health permitted.
