WASHINGTON - The 2608 th birthday of Lord Mahavir, was celebrated by Jain Society of Washington Metro area at High point High school in Beltsville Maryland. Community Affair Minister of Indian Embassy, Mr. Sanjay Sinha, was the chief guest, who was representing Indian Embassy and Mr. Parag Mehta, a member of Obama transition team was special guest. More than 700 members of the community were Ipresent in colorful Indian dresses to witness this grand occasion. 113 children performed cultural program based on Mahavir's life, principles
and Jainism, which included skits, play, dances, songs and Ras- Garba. Chief guest Sanjay Sinha in his address told the audience that Mahavir's principles of non-violence and forgiveness are universal and are the essence of peace, happiness and harmony. Parag Mehta told that Mahavir's principles are the necessity in today's world to maintain world peace and to reduce terrorism. Prakash Mehta did a presentation about future temple expansion. Sharad Doshi distributed trophies to all the participants. The privilege of Aarti and Mangal divo went to Jaysingh - Sumangala Bhandari and family for their highest biding. MANCHESTER - The Jain community of Manchester organised a two day event on 18th and 19th April at their splendid community centre. Nitin Mehta of the Indian Vegetarian Society was a keynote speaker on the 18th. Amongst the other speakers were Gaurakrishnadas of Manchester Hare Krishna society, Mukesh Pancoli of the Brahma Kumari organisation and Marion Hussenbux of the Quaker Concern for Animals. Nitin spelled out the ecological and the health cost of a meat diet. A Mahaveer award was presented to Leslie Tarleton who for the last 30 years has dedicated her life to animals kept at the two sanctuaries she runs in Liverpool and Wales. The award was given away by Jayendrabhai Patel who is an active member of the Jain Samaj. On the 19th around 300

people attended the celebrations of the birth of Lord Mahaveer. In his talk Nitin urged Jains to revive the message of Ahimsa as preached by Lord Mahaveer. We have inherited a priceless culture, we must protect it and nurture it well. The president of Manchester Jain Samaj Piyush Mehta, on behalf of the Jain community presented Nitin with a memento for his tireless efforts in promoting vegetarianism. The Vegetarian Society of UK has it headquarters in Manchester and there were thousands of vegetarians in Manchester area as far back as the 1870's. APOWA CELEBRATES MAHAVEER JAYANTI 2009 - APOWA (Action for Protection of Wild Animals) conducted the MAHAVEER JAYANTI programme in a grand manner on 7th April 2009 at USAK High school, Arua Kadaliban. Mr. Ashok Bal, Head master, USAK high school presided over the function. Mr. Manoj Ku Satapathy, teacher in charge, Karuna Club, USAK delivered the welcome address and introduction of the programme. The programme was started with the school prayer and karuna prayer. Mr. Bijaya Ku Kabi, Director, APOWA and Honorary Animal welfare officer, Animal Welfare Board of India delivered an inspiring speech on "Ahimsa through Non-violence". He explained the various activities of APOWA and karuna clubs. He explained the five freedoms of animal welfare. He suggested the teachers to adopt compassion, love and sympathy towards the students while teaching. He also insisted to show kindness towards all living creatures. He also explained the nutritional values of vegetarianism. His speech was followed by Mr. Somanath Mohapatra, teacher, USAK. He insisted the students to be compassionate towards animals and nature. Among others Mr. Amulya Ku Pardia, teacher USAK spoke about animal welfare. His talk was interesting and interactive. CHILD DIKSHAS CASE ADMITTED IN MUMBAI HIGH COURT
The Mumbai High Court has admitted a petition filed in a case of bal-diksha wherin the Indore-based parents had challenged the power of the Child Welfare Committee to look into the life of a sadhvi. A bench of Justices, DK D Deshmukh and R. S. Mohite, while hearing the arguments, indicated the possibility of making compulsory the appointment of a guardian for such bal-dikshas. "We may make it necessary for a district judge to appoint a guardian for every minor who takes diksha (renunciation of the world as practised among Jains)," observed Justice Deshmukh. At one point, Justice Mohite seemed unhappy with the fate that greeted baldikshas. Senior counsel Rafiq Dada, assisted by advocate Sanjay Jain, said the court could not interfere with the practice of diksha. An NGO had complained to the CWC, which had opined that the bal-dikshas required better looking after. But the parents said their daughter had chosen to take diksha on her own and no one else could intervene in the age-old tradition followed by the Jain community. The court had appointed a panel to interview the child, who had accepted diksha, NGO counsel Mihir Desai said. A report submitted to the court held that the six-year-old's diksha was "clearly a decision taken for her without thinking about the consequences" and "not in her best interests".
SAINT SHREE MANIBHADRA JI MAHARAJ LEAVES FOR NEPAL FOR HIS VIHAR
Nepal Kesari Shri Manibhadra Ji maharaj alongwith Shri Viram Muniji maharaj, disciples of Shree Sumati Prakashji Maharaj, belonging to Shwetambar Sthanakwasi Shraman sangh left Delhi on their vihar for Kathmandu. They were accorded a warm send-off prior to their departure by the Manav Milan groups of Delhi, Meerut and Sonepat. Many members of Jain samaj, devotees of Shri Sumati Prakash Ji maharaj, other saints and sadhwi attended the function. Popular members of the community, namely Shri Swadesh Bhushan Ji and Shri Subhash Oswal spoke on the occasion and expressed their good wishes to the saints, leaving for Nepal.
JAIN SADHWI REACH NEPAL SPREADING THE MESSAGE OF AHIMSA
Three Jain sSdhwi, named Sadhwi Shri Mangal Prabha Ji, Poonam Shri Ji and Vandana Ji, all belonging to Shwetambar Sthanakwasi sect arrived at Kathmandu after covering a distance of 1100 Km. all the way from Gwalior to this place, passing through Bhind, Itawa, Kanpur, Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Berawa on the way. The entire distance was covered by them in a short period of two months. They were warmly received on the way wherever they stopped. They were heartily welcomed by the Jain institutions and societies, specially when they reached Kathmandu. These Sadhwi are the disciples of Ganadheesh Shri Umesh Muni Ji Maharaj.

YOUNG JAINS OF DELHI HOLD JAIN SANSKAR PAATHSHALA - To mark the celebration of Mahavir Jayanti (7th Apr, 09) Young Jains, Delhi organized a Jain Sanskar Paathshala on 5th Apr, 09 at Adyatma Sadhana Kendra, Chattarpur, Mehrauli Gurgaon Road, Delhi. The program was structured as a full day Paathshala camp and attended by more than 50 Young Jain Professionals. Various speakers were invited from different parts of the society to provide an insight on Jain Sanskars and to help people for building them with in. The Paathshala included little known Jain meditation i.e. Preksha Dhyan & Karyotsarg reflections.
The program started with Manglacharan and Namokar mantra chanting. Gaurav Jain 'Lakshaya' introduced Young Jains and provided the outline of program and was MC for the program.

Dr. Jay Kumar Upadhye, an eminent Jain scholar took session on Jain Sanskar, he described the Jain Sanskars in life of Tirthankaras and said "Parents are the Sanskriti (culture) and Children are their Sanskars". Swami Dharmanand ji, Director Adhyatma Sadhana Kendra told about the Jain Meditation Preksha Dhyan and its reinvention, people had a serene exercise for practice of dhyan.
The session was followed by Young Scholar Dr. Anekant Jain, a Prakrit & Jainology lecturer, Jaipur who emphasized on the Jainism and its relevance today from the antiquity and modern perspective in very informative and comprehensible idiom. He touched on positive points in Jainism on female education and climate change related problems. He said "Religion's gradually increase and decrease which is in synchronization with universal cycle of progress and recession but principles and Sanskars makes us to co-exist as mutually dependent even in adverse conditions". Following the significance Dr. C. Devakumar, an eminent Jain scholar and Principal Scientist at IARI, Delhi specified on the intricate subject of
Practice of Jainism in Daily life. He acquainted on basics of Jain life and presented a perfect blend of physics and Jain principles with grin. He said "As the radiation of gold radiates gold aura only so is for the Jina Dharma principles".
The post lunch sessions were shifted from Principles to social responsibility. Mr. Anil Kr. Jain, a Chartered Accountant, Jainism devoted personality, & running one of the world's largest Jain websites jainsamaj.org grew to subject on the need of Young leadership for Jain society today. He mentioned the success of a few Young Jain personalities and ignited the youth to take them as role models. He said "the thousands of crore of rupees which are locked in vaults and lockers of temples belongs to Jain society and its children, we should come forward for betterment of our children and spent it judiciously before it goes to hands of unscrupulous elements and its too late".
The waft session was followed by another motivated assembly by Yogesh Jain, Chairman Young Jains and software architect who made people aware about the ambitious plans of Young Jains in coming year and collectively with members revisited the vision of Young Jains. The Paathshala camp got an appreciation from attendees as well as the speakers and blessing for the team.

students( undergraduates and Post Graduates ) and full time professors and researchers from many universities and colleges around the world to India to give them intensive class room teaching and to show case the Jain community, its rich culture and living traditions to these scholars. Since 2005, more than 82 such Scholars have come to India and benefited by this program. This year the ISSJS program has expanded with the offering of three stand alone programs. The first one is a One month Long ISSJS at Mahidol; University, In Bangkok, Thailand with 17 Buddhist Scholars from several universities participating there. This program will start on 23rd April, 2009 at Mahidol university. ISSJS is taking several noted Jain Professors and Scholars from universities in India to Thailand, to teach these Buddhist scholars and create an environment and a forum for systematic study and research in Jainism and thus a dialogue between the two great religions of the world. DR. PANKAJ JAIN TO TEACH ONLINE COURSES ON JAINISM AND SANSKRIT AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY - Dr. Pankaj Jain will teach two courses on Jainism and Sanskrit at North Carolina State University, where he teaches at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and also at the Department of Religion and Philosophy. Jain, who earlier taught Indian cultural subjects at Rutgers and other universities in
New Jersey, recently moved to North Carolina to take up a full-time teaching position at the university. Currently he teaches Indic traditions and ecology, Hindi films, Hindi language and literature: about half of the students are of South Asian heritage.
The course on Jainism is titled 'From Mahavira to Mahatma Gandhi: The Nonviolent Jain Traditions of India'. 60-YEAR-OLD, PARASMAL JAIN APPEARS FOR CLASS 10 EXAMS BANGALORE: A 60-year-old man appeared for matriculation exams in the city. Defying age, he pursued his educational career rubbing shoulders with students of his grandchildren's age. Parasmal Jain had to leave his studies in between on account of some family problems. He has set an example by going back to his studies at an age when elderly people detach themselves from materialistic world. For this cloth merchant, it was a big decision to pursue studies and realise his childhood desire of completing his education. "I always wanted to study, but could not complete my education because of some family problems. I got my children educated and when they got settled, then I thought of realizing my dream and decided to pursue my studies further," said Jain. Jain was supported by his family in his quest for learning and planned to study further till his health permitted.

UNIVERSITY, LADNUN SANCTIONED A GRANT OF RS. 6.69 CRORES BY UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMISSION - A sum of Rs. 6.69 crores has been sanctioned as grant-in-aid by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the period of 11th Five year plan to Jain Vishwa Bharati University at Ladnun in Rajasthan on the recommendations of an expert team constituted by the U. G. C. The team, headed by Dr. J. V. Prabhakar, ViceChancellor of Rayasaleema University had visited the Vishwa Bharati
University and submitted their report after a thorough evaluation of the programmes, facilities and activities being conducted by the university. U.G.C. having been fully satisfied with the recommendations of the expert committee sanctioned this sum of Rs. 6.69 crores, which was almost six times the amount sanctioned in the previous five year plan. The Secretary of U. G. C., Mr. D. R. K. Chauhan has informed the Vice-Chancellor of Jain Vishwa Bharati, Dr. Samani Mangal Prabha Ji about the grant., hoping that the amount sanctioned will help in making all-round progress and accomplishment of the proposed projects.

'AHIMSA SILK FABRIC', A NEW WAY OF MANUFACTURING SILK
The Controller of Patents, Designs, Trademarks and Geographical Indications has granted patent for an ecofriendly method of manufacturing mulberry silkworm yarn. The patent has been granted for 20 years to Kusuma Rajaiah, hailing from Hanamkonda, in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh. Rajaiah is a technical officer at the Andhra Pradesh Co-operative Society. The yarn is called 'Ahimsa silk fabric', and is prepared without killing the silkworm. The process involves producing yarn without putting the silkworms in boiling water. Instead, it uses leftover cocoons which are treated with chemicals and later dissolved. Just a quick ride back to basics. Silk is commonly obtained from mulberry worms. The silkworms are fed with mulberry leaves in the larval stage. Then, in

the pupal stage, the silkworms secrete a fluid by which they cover themselves and form a cocoon. After the gestation period, the moth opens and flies away. The yarn is produced when these cocoons are put into boiling water thus killing the moths.
The technology involves piercing the cocoon thus allowing the moth to fly through the hole. In fact, he collects those cocoons which do not have moths inside from Seri Fed. Though he does not get continuity of yarn thereby causing breakages, it is slowly spinned bringing together the breakages and made into a single thread. The process is certainly laborious, and of course reflects in the pricing of the final product. Out of 100 kilos of cocoons, only 16 kilos were obtained and each kilo is being charged by the spinning unit. The cost per saree might come to about Rs 4,500 unlike the conventional ones ranging from Rs 2,000 onwards. The quality obtained is soft and finer with the 'Ahimsa silk' compared to the usual silk. Rajaiah, along with the National Institute of Fashion Technology will soon be commercialising the Ahimsa silk'. This apart, the technical officer at the Andhra Pradesh Co-operative Society has plans to talk to fashion houses and big retail chains to store these kind of eco-friendly products as they are sold at a premium. Perhaps, this patent will get recognition and bring the concept of 'Ahimsa' fresh in the weaving industry.

Having firm reasons for changing your diet -- whether moral, ethical, medical, environmental or otherwise -- can keep you on track.

According to the society Jains do not promote vegetarianism as much as they should. Vegetarianism is about protecting our Dharma and Indian culture. While we do little the meat lobby is spending millions to promote meat eating in India. Do we feed meat to cats and dogs even though we know that they are completely healthy on a vegetarian diet? A follower of Kundakunda and Pujyapada, Acarya Joindu was a Jain monk. His compositions however embrace the universal spirituality later found in the works of Kabir. The current work by Joindu has been influenced by Kundakunda's MOKKHAPAHUDA as well as Pujyapada's SAMADHITANTRA. But its sheer spontaneity and flow helps it hold its own in such distinguished company. In the tradition of earlier monks like Kundakunda, Umasvami, Pujyapada and Samantabhadra, Joindu discloses nothing about himself in his works. Not much is known about him other than the fact that he probably lived in the 6th century CE. Joindu wrote in Apabhramsha, the language of the masses. Apabhramsha was a newly developing language, free from the formal restrictions of Sanskrit. Hence, the free flow of ideas and the verve in his writings. The text has been sensitively translated into Hindi with minimal interference and succeeds in conveying to the reader the feel of the original. MISCELLANEOUS JAIN NEWS FROM PUNJAB For the first time, to celebrate Mahaveer Jayanti , Punjab Government released full page advertisements in 40 newspapers across the state. Earlier in 1947, Punjab Government had released similar greetings. Sri Rakesh Jain, chief of Bhagwan Mahaveer Seva Sansthan, Ludhiana pursued the issue with the government for officially recognizing the most important festival of Jain Community. As part of Mahaveer Jayanti calibrations, Adinath Jain Ladies Organisation of Ludhiana also organized cultural programme (Bhajan Sandhya). The event was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Sri Sukhbir Singh Badal. Famous Jain singer from Mumbai, Sri Rajendra Jain ands his group gave an impressive performance. On 12th April, Bhagwan Mahaveer Sewa Sansthan organized polio camp & distributed Life support equipments etc. to over 40 persons. Jain Samaj of Ludhiana has also constructed a new Jain Temple Complex which is just 25 km. from Ludhiana. This complex is spread over 121,000 sq. yards of land & comprises a temple, museum, Meditation hall, residential facilities etc, apart from expansive lawns, trees & plants. Jain Acharya Vallabh Vijay Suri ji Maharaj is an example par excellence of humanism and spiritualism. Chhagan (childhood name) was born at Vadodara in November 1870 AD to worthy parents Deepchand and Icchabai. In search of peace he studied under his holiness, Jain Acharya Shree Vijaynand Suriji Maharaj (popularly known as Guru Atmaramji), the then highly venerated saint and a profound scholar of Jainism. Chhagan entered monkhood (sadhu) renouncing wordly life in 1887 AD at Radhanpur (Gujarat) at the tender age of 17 years. He was later christened Muni Vallabh Vijay. Guru Atmaramji taught Muni Vallabh the Jaina philosophy propounded by Lord Mahavir viz Ahimsa (non-violence), Anekant (non-absolutism), Aparigraha (non-possessiveness). Vallabh also mastered study of contemporary religions. Unfortunately, the illustrious Guru did not live long but he surely advised Muni Vallabh to set up, not only places of Worship, but also educational institutions and service centres which would help both men and women to understand religion in its true perspective,
True to his Master, Muni Vallabh worked for the welfare of the society irrespective of caste, class and creed. He initiated various programes to eradicate Ignorance, Superstition and Illiteracy. His humane approach, scientific outlook and practical life endeared him to the masses. He was bestowed with Acharyaship in 1924 at Lahore (now in Pakistan). He placed before the mankind, both by precept and practice, the highest moral and spiritual values of life. He widely traveled barefooted as in enjoined on Jain Monks, many times all over Maharashtra, Gujrat, Saurashtra, Rajasthan, U.P. M.P, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir to spread this message.

to improve standard of life. He laid special emphasis on the education of women. He motivated the society to establish a large number of schools, college, gurukuls, libraries and centres of craft and learning in many parts of the country. Opening of Shri Mahavira Jaina Vidyalay at Mumbai as far back as 1915 and its subsequent branches, Shri Atmanand Jain Gurukul at Gujranwala and Shri Atmanand Jain college at Ambala are just but a few of the glorious examples. Some people were, however, skeptical that modern education would spoil culture. To dispel their doubts and apprehensions he gave a beautiful example by saying "In thid developing age, if one wants to light the room or move the fan or start a machine, use of electricity is essential. And God forbid if electricity burns someone, the fault lies with the user and not with electricity.
Acharyashree was an exponent of research work. He became instrumental in collecting and preserving thousands of volumes of priceless handwritten manuscripts and published works on Indology at Shri Mahavira Jaina Vidyalaya, Mumbai and Jain Gurukul Gujranwala and other libraries as valuable store house of knowledge and cultural heritage. He advised to marshal the existing data within the framework of modern research. Acharyashree aroused people from slumber wherever he went during the freedom movement. Identifying himself with freedom struggle, Acharyashree wore khadi throughout his life. He was a patriot to the core. Swadeshi found an echo in his speeches. Acharyashree strongly depreciated display of wealth and extravagance on social occasion, dowry and such other evils. Though born in Gujrat, he always promoted Hindi as national language. He was a renowned orator, author and poet. In addition to sevral works in prose, he wrote about 1600 poems, songs and hymns in Hindi, rich both in language and content.
Acharyashree came into contact with great patriots of the nation like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Motilal Nehru, Shri Moraji Desai and other stalwarts of the freedom movement and luminaries of pre and post independence era. He supported Satyagraha and non-cooperation as potent yet non-violent tools to achieve independence. His 14 points formula for worked peace, highly appreciated by Shri Moraji Desai and the then Prime Minister Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru became the base for Panchsheel doctrine. For the all round development of the society, Acharyashree had, in fact,made shiksha (education), seva (service), sangathan (unity), sahitya (literature) and swavlamban (self-reliance) as his creed and mission of life. THEFT IN JAIN TEMPLES The cases of theft of valuable items in Jain temples keep on occurring frequently and only in rare cases, the culprits have been brought to book by the authorities. Recently, theft of two Jain idols and donation boxes took place in a Digambar Jain temple at Vaishnodevi Nagar near the airport in Jaipur. The thieves broke open the wooden door to make entry into the main hall of the temple. The two idols belonged to Shri Parshwanath Ji and Shri Muni Suvrat swami. The donation boxes contained about six months' collection. The matter was promptly reported to the local police but no arrests have reportedly been made so far. Likewise, theft case occurred at

Mahasati Shri Umraon Kanwar Ji Maharaj 'Archana', belonging to Shwetambar Sthanakwasi Shraman Sangh and disciple of late Shri Mishrimal Ji maharaj, breathed her last at Ajmer on the 22nd April, 2009 after a prolonged illness. The entire Sthanakwasi Jain community was shocked to learn about her sad demise. Devotees from all over the country rushed to Ajmer to have her last darshan, to pay homage to their most revered sadhwi and to participate in the funeral procession which was taken out on the 23rd April through the streets of Ajmer. Condolence meetings were held in various towns of Rajasthan and elsewhere to pay homage to her on getting the news of her devlok . At Ajmer, it was decided by 'Manav Seva Sansthan', a religious institution, that a befitting memorial will be built in Ajmer in her memory at a cost of Rs. 5 crores. It will be named as "Archana Dham" and it will house a hostel for Jain students, a vradhhashram (Old men's home), Yoga sadhna Kendra, Dharmshala, Paushadhshala, Pravachan hall and sthanak.

of 26th March and then it was taken in a procession from his house at Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg to the cremation ground at Adarsh Nagar, passing through Trimurti Circle and Moti Doongri road. His body was shown in a sitting posture, seated in a gracefully decorated baikunthi. People of all sects and communities not only from the town of Jaipur but from many other near-by places had joined the procession and paid their homage to the departed soul. Well-decorated horses and elephants formed a part of the majestic procession. Coins and dry fruits were being showered around the procession by family members. The cremation was carried out in a traditional way in a manner similar to that for the Jain saints. In fact, he had been leading a pious, austere and saintly life for he last many years
Shri Chordia had been Chairman of All India Sadhumargi Jain Sangh, Bikaner for 6 years and patron and member of several Jain societies, institutions, schools and hospitals. He had accompanied Acharya Shri Nanesh at one time to a village near Ratlam where was instrumental in inspiring all the local people of a village 'Balai' to stop taking meat and start living on pure vegetarian meals. He had been regularly observing two-day, three-day, fourday and eight-day fasts. Jain community of Jaipur feels proud of having such a devoted, dedicated, dignified and graceful person with them.
