________________ 30 INTRODUCTION they are commented upon by Ac. Abhayadevasūri. (Refer to the Bhagavatīsūtravyākhyā, p. 568B, lines 5-9). 2. The portion of the text contained in lines 20-23 on p. 593 is yielded by the sio ms. alone. It is not available in any other ms. Nor do we find it in any printed edition. It is original. On the basis of the evidence from the Süryaprajñaptisūtra we have determined its originality. For details one may refer to foot-note 7 on p. 593.. fourteera except la there occus the printed marks that a Here the 3. In the first and the fifth sūtras of the fourth Uddeśa of the fourteenth Sataka there occurs a reading 'samayam samayam. All the mss., except the so, and all the printed editions have 'samayan only in its place. Here the commentator remarks that according to vibhaktivyatyaya the first word 'samayam' in the accusative case is to be taken as 'samaye' (= kale) in the locative case. Thus he understands it in the sense of 'at that time'. But he understands the second word 'samayam' in the sense of minute time-division. The Agama Publication Scheme has laid down a principle that the readings accepted in the Vrtti are to be accepted provided they are available in some mss. and do not present any difficulty, even though they are different from those available in the very old mss. We have followed this principle. To illustrate, we give below two instances in point. 1. At one place the enlarged version available in the very old oms, is not accepted in the body of the text but is given in a footnote (fn. 2, p. 665). At this place we find in other mss. the abridged version which is accepted in the Vrtti. So, we too have accepted it in the body of the text. 2. At two places we found readings yielded by the sio ms. to be useful. Yet we have not accepted them in the body of the text. Out of the two places, one occurs on p. 75 of the first part (see fns. 6, 8 and 15 on p. 75). At this place all the mss. except the to yield the reading accepted in the Vrtti. Though the subject found discussed in the fifth sūtra of the first Uddeśa of the Sixteenth Sataka (p. 743) is the same as the one discussed on p. 75 of the first part, yet at this place all the mss. yield the reading different from the one accepted in the Vrtti. That is, the reading that the toms. yields at that place on p. 75 is identical with the reading yielded by all the mss. at this place on p. 743. (See fn. 3 on p. 743). For the sole reason of accepting the readings accepted in the Vrtti we have noted in the foot-note the reading yielded by the so ms. as a variant, though it seems to be original. We should bear in mind that the author of the Vrtti has accepted and explained the readings he found in the mss. available to him.
