उपसाम उवणीया गुगमहया विणचरिससरिसंपि ।
पशिवायंति कसाया कि पुण सेसे सागस्य ॥ गुणवान पुरुष के द्वारा उपशांत की गई कषायें जिन भमवान सरीखे चारित्र वाले व्यक्ति का भी पतन करा देती हैं, फिर अन्य सरागी पुरुषों का तो कहना ही क्या है ? ___ अतः ज्यों-ज्यों नीचे उतरता जाता है, वैसे-वैसे पढ़ते समय जिसजिस गुणस्थान में जिन-जिन प्रकृतियों का बंधविच्छेद किया था, उसउस गुणस्थान में आने पर वे प्रकृतियां पुनः बंधने लगती हैं।
उतरते-उतरते वह सातवें या ण्ठे गुणस्थान में ठहरता है और यदि वहां भी अपने को संभाल नहीं पाता है तो पांचवे और चौथे गुणस्थान में पहुंचता है। यदि अनंतानुबंधी का उदय आ जाता है तो सासादन सम्यग्दृष्टि होकर पुनः मिथ्यात्व में पहुँच जाता है। और इस तरह सब किया कराया चौपट हो जाता है ।
लेकिन यह बात ध्यान में रखना चाहिये कि यदि पतनोन्मुखी उपशम श्रेणि का आरोहक छठे गुणस्थान में आकर संभल जाता है तो पुनः उपशम श्रोणि चढ़ सकता है । क्योंकि एक भव में दो बार उपशम श्रेणि चढ़ने का उल्लेख पाया जाता है। परन्तु जो जीव दो बार
