पंचम कर्मग्रम्य

यद्यपि उपशम श्र ेणि में मोहनीय कर्म की समस्त प्रकृतियों का पूरी तरह उपशम किया जाता है, परन्तु उपशम कर देने पर भी उस कर्म का अस्तित्व तो बना ही रहता है। जैसे कि गंदले पानी में फिटकरो यादि डालने से उसने में बैठ जाती है और पानी निर्मल हो जाता है, किन्तु उसके नीचे गन्दगी ज्यों की त्यों बनी रहती हूँ | वैसे ही उपशम श्र ेणि में जीव के भावों को कलुषित करने वाला प्रधान कर्म मोहनीय शांत कर दिया जाता है। अपूर्वकरण आदि परिणाम जैसे-जैसे ऊपर चढ़ते जाते हैं वैसे-वैसे मोहनीय कर्म की धूलि रूपी उत्तर प्रकृतियों के कण एक के बाद एक उत्तरोत्तर शांत हो जाते हैं । इस प्रकार से उपशम को गई प्रकृतियों में न तो स्थिति और अनुभागको कम किया जा सकता है और न बढ़ाया जा सकता है । न उनका उदय या उदीरणा हो सकती हैं और न उन्हें अन्य प्रकृति रूप ही किया जा सकता है । किन्तु यह उपशम तो अन्तमुहूर्त काल के लिये किया जाता है | अतः दसवें गुणस्थान में सूक्ष्म लोभ का उपशम करके जब जीव ग्यारहवें गुणस्थान में पहुँचता है तो कम-से-कम एक समय और अधिक-सेअधिक अन्तमुहूर्त के बाद उपशम हुई कषायें अपत्ता उद्र ेक कर बैठती हैं। जिसका फल यह होता है कि उपशम श्र ेणि का आरोहक जीव जिस क्रम से ऊपर चढ़ा था, उसी क्रम से नीचे उतरना शुरू कर देता है और उसका पतन प्रारम्भ हो जाता है । उपशांत कषाय वाले जीव का पतन अवश्यंभावी है। इसी बात को आवश्यक नियुक्ति गाथा ११८ में स्पष्ट किया है कि

Although all the natures of mohaniya karma are completely subsided in the upshama shreni, even after being subsided, the existence of that karma remains.
