Vijaya Dharma Suri
"A poor man's son, he grew to be at Great Teacher. He studied in no school, and received no university degrees; but he was so learned that on him the Hindu Panditas of Benares conferred the title of Acbärya. As a boy, he mixed with men of no character, he learnt to gamble; but this gambler became a saint! He lost much in gambling; one day, this Mulachanda ( that was his original name ) reflected on the vanity of the world; he repented; that day's gambling became for him a door for the coming in of God's grace. He wept bitter tears; he resolved to leave his town and go in search of a Guru; he found one; studied the Shastras; he became a scholar, a sage, a saint. His life's story sends to us a message of hope.”

यो 'मूलचन्द्रे'त्यभिधामुपेतो વિવધ શિક્ષળડવૃચી अटाध्यमानोऽस्वहितावधानो ભૂતે “સા'ડા જ સારા !
જેમનું મૂળ નામ “મૂલચંદ '; પિતાનું હિત સમજવામાં ગાફેલ રહેતા બુડથલ જેવા જે છોકરાએ ભણવા તરફ-પ્રારંભિક શિક્ષણ લેવા તરફ ધ્યાન ન આપ્યું, અને ભમવા–રમવાઓ મશગુલ બની આખર જુગાર અને “સટ્ટા” સુધી પહોંચે;
Whose original name was Mulachandix and who, dull and disregardful of his own future, being averse to school-life or study, stupidly gave himself up to playing and purposeless roaming, and in the long run became addicted to gambling and speculation;

ધૃતપરાયણ જે છોકરાએ-જેના પિતાની આર્થિક સ્થિતિ સાધારણ હતી,-જુગારમાં પૈસા હેમ્યા, જે ઉપર બાપને આકરે ઠપકે સાંભળવાથી એકદમ જેની
ખ” ઉઘડી ( જેનું હૃદય એકદમ ફડફડાટ કરતું જાગ્રસ્ત થયું ;
Who, being fond of gambling, one day risked and lost a large amount of money in the evil pastime, whereupon who was severely reprimanded by his father whose pecuniary condition was not satisfactory, with the result that who suddenly heoame awakened;

अभाद् यदुन्मीलितलोचनस्य जगत्प्रपञ्चो विषमो विचित्रः । विरज्य यो मोहमयाद् विहाराश्रेयःसमन्वेषण उत्सुकोऽभूत् ।।
જેની ખુલેલી દષ્ટિને સંસારપ્રપંચ વિષમ અને વિચિત્ર ભા; મેહમય વિહરણથી વિરક્ત થઈ જે કલ્યાણની શોધ માટે ઉત્સુક બન્ય;
To whose awakened inner eye the transmigratory cycle ( phenomenal world or earthly life-संसार ) appeared ugly or strangely mysterious and troublesome, whereupon who being disgusted with the delusive mundane living, became anxious to find out his true welfare;

(૧) स्वग्रामतो '+भावपुरं' समेत्य છે “વૃદ્ધિચન્દ્ર' પુત્ર સત્ત! आकर्ण्य तज्ज्ञानमयोपदेशं सजोऽभवत् प्रव्रजितु. तदन्ते ।।
જે પિતાના ગામથી “ભાવનગર” ગયે, મહાત્મા વૃદ્ધિચન્દ્રજી”ની પાસે પહોંચ્યું અને તે સત્તનો સબધપૂર્ણ ઉપદેશ સાંભળી, તેમનાં ચરણોમાં દીક્ષિત થવા (“સર્વવિરતિ ” દીક્ષા ગ્રહણ કરવા તૈયાર થયે
Who thereupon leaving his native village went to Bhavnagar, approached the saint Vriddhichandraji Mabārāja and after hearing his instructive sermons giving proper guidance, became ready to lay himself at the feet of the revered ascetic and to get himself initiated into the order of monks;

ચારિત્રનું પરિપાલન, ગુરુભક્તિનિષ્ઠા અને વિદ્યાધ્યયનમાં સુગ્ય પ્રયત્નશીલપણું આ ત્રણના યોગે, આત્મનિશ્ચયમાં નિશ્ચલ એવા જે સાધુને અસ્પૃદય વધતો ચાલે,
Who, with unswerving resoluteness, went on achieving his progressive advancement with the aid of right conduct, steady devotion to the great Guru ( preceptor ) and proper diligence in the pursuit of learning;

अप्यल्पमेधा दृढनिश्चयेन प्रकर्षमारोहति कर्मयोगात् । इत्येतदर्थस्य निदर्शनं यः स्वतः प्रकाशं प्रकटीचकार ।।
જાડી બુદ્ધિને માણસ પણ દઢ સંક૯પના બળે પ્રખર પુરુષાર્થ સાધી લોકમાન્ય ઉત્કર્ષને પ્રાપ્ત કરે છે એ વાતનું ઉદાહરણ જેમણે પોતાની જાતથી સ્પષ્ટ રજૂ ક્યું છે;
Who has, by his own example, clearly demonstrated that even a dull-witted person can achieve a high degree of advance. ment, if he is devoted to his duties with the force of firm determination;

गृहस्थवर्गेषु सुयोग्यविद्वदुत्पादनार्थं हृदये यदीये । समुत्कटो जागरितोऽभिलाष: समाजमभ्युनतिमानिनीषौ ।
સમાજને ઉન્નત બનાવવાની ભાવના સેવતા જેમના હૃદયમાં, સામાન્ય જનસમૂહમાં (વૈશ્ય-વર્ગમાં) સુયોગ્ય વિદ્વાને ઉત્પન્ન કરવાની ઉત્કટ આકાંક્ષા જાગી;
In whose mind bent upon leading the society to elevation, there arose an ardent desire to produce able learned men from among the house-holders (common people );

(१०) विद्याप्रचाराय समेत्य काशीमस्थापयत् संस्कृत-पाठशालाम् । ततः समुत्पाद्य विशारदांश्च तेजस्विनो देशहितं व्यधाद् यः ।।
જેમણે વિદ્યાપ્રચાર માટે કાશી જઈ ત્યાં સંસકૃતપાઠશાલા સ્થાપન કરી, એ સંસ્થામાંથી તેજવી વિદ્વાને પેદા કરી દેશનું ભલું કર્યું છે;
Who, having gone to Kashi (Benares) founded a Sanskrita-teaching institution for the spread of learning and benefitted the country by producing from the insti. tution great erudite scholars;

જેમણે તત્ત્વજ્ઞાનના મહાન્ પ્રાચીન ગ્રન્થાને પ્રકાશમાં આણી ભારતીય સુન્દર સાહિત્યલક્ષ્મીને વિશેષ સમૃદ્ધ જાહેર કરી છે;
Who brought to light time-honoured old great works on various important subjects and thus proclaimed the superior richness of the good Ārya ( Indian )
literature;

पाश्चात्यमेधाविगणेन साध विधाय पत्रव्यवहारमुच्चैः। व्यस्तारयत् तत्र भुवि प्रभूतां य आर्यविद्यामहिमप्रशस्तिम् ।।
જેમણે પાશ્ચાત્ય વિદ્વાનો સાથે મહત્વપૂર્ણ પત્રવ્યવહાર કરી તે દેશમાં આર્ય તત્ત્વજ્ઞાનના મહત્ત્વની મહતી પ્રશસ્તિ ફેલાવી છે;
Who kept up an excellent correspondence with western scholars and thus diffused in their countries the renown of the greatness and magnitude of the Arya culture and philosophy;

बंगांग काशी मगधादिभूमी - . मटन्नहिंसामुपदिश्य सम्यक् । अहिंसधर्मे समतिष्ठिपद् यः परःशतान् क्रूर - पलादलोकान् ॥
જેમણે ખગ, અંગ, કાશી અને મગધ વગેરે ભૂપ્રદેશમાં ભ્રમણ કરી, અહિંસાના ઉપદેશ કરી સેકડા ક્રૂર અને માંસાહારી માણસાને અહિંસા-ધમ પમાડ્યો છે;
Who, while travelling in the countries of Kashi, Magadha, Anga and Banga, preached Ahinsa ( non-injury ) and caused. hundreds of cruel and flesh-eating men to follow the path of Ahinsā;

सम्मिल्य यो भारतदेशिराजानबोधयद् भूमिधवार्हधर्मम् । यः सत्कृतो भारत - विद्वदग्रगण्यैश्च तत्सद्गुणराशिमुग्धैः ॥
જેમણે ભારતના દેશી રાજાઓને મળી રાજધર્મના ઉપદેશ આપ્યા છે; જેમને ભારતના અગ્રગણ્ય વિદ્વાનાએ તેમના સદ્ગુણસમૂહ ઉપર મુગ્ધ થઇ સત્કાર્યા છે;
Who met native Rājās in India and sermonized to them the duties of Rājās; who was adored by the foremost learned men of India, being attracted by his great virtues;

मेधाविविद्यार्थियुगं प्रहित्य लंकापुरी तस्थितबौद्धलोकैः । प्रायस्यदापादयितुं प्रशस्यां य एकतां सांस्कृतिकीमुदारम् ।।
જેમણે પિતાના વિદભૂત બે વિદ્યાર્થીઓને “લંકા ” (સિલેન) એકલી ત્યાંના બોદ્ધો સાથે સાંસ્કૃતિક એકતા સાધવા ઉદાર પ્રયત્ન સેવ્યો છે,
Who having sent his two learned students to Lanka (Ceylon ), broad-heartodly tried to work out good cultural unity with the Bauddhas of the place;

કથા "અનાવરમમાપમાન सहर्षनादैरभिनन्द्यते स्म ॥
પ્રયાગ (અલાહાબાદ)માં કુંભના મેળા વખતે ભરાયેલી “સનાતનધર્મમહાસભા ની મહાસભામાં ભારતભૂષણ પં. શ્રી માલવીયજીના આમત્રણથી ઉપસ્થિત થઈ જેમણે વ્યાખ્યાન આપ્યું હતું અને તે સમયે સભાના હર્ષનાદોથી જેમને અભિનન્દવામાં આવ્યા હતા
Who, being invited by the late Pandita Malaviyaji, delivered a lecture in the grand meeting of 'Sanatana Dharma Mabásabbā' assembled on the occasion of the KumbhaMela at Prayaga ( Allahabad ) and who was there highly greeted with acclamations ;

થો નર્મની-થન-ટાહિ—મિક ્-संसद्भिरल्पेतरगौरवेण । सदस्यरूपेण समीयते स्म पौर्वात्य - पाश्चात्य कशृंखली सन् ॥
પોર્વાત્ય અને પાશ્ચાત્ય વચ્ચે સાંકળ જેવા જેમને અગાળની એશિઆટિક સાસાયટિએ એસેાસિએટ મેમ્બર તરીકે અને જર્મનીની આરિયન્ટલ સેાસાયિટ તથા ઇટાલિની એશિઆટિક સાસાયટિએ એનરિર મેમ્બર તરીકે સુયેાગ્ય સન્માનથી સ્વીકાર્યાં હત;
Who being regarded as a connective link between the East and the West, was honoured by his election as an Honorary Member of the German Oriental and Italian Asiatic Societies and an Associate Member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal;

અબૂ ના ચામડાંનાં બુટ સાથે પ્રવેશ કરતા હતા એ અનુચિત પ્રવૃત્તિને જેમણે ઉપ્પર અધિકારી ( એજન્ટ ટુ ધી ગવર્નર જનરલ, રાજપુતાના, કૅાત્રિન ’ સાહેબ ) દ્વારા દૂર કરાવી છે;

આવા નાના કુળ ન થરાદ્રરવા સંમનિ ટૂર છે.
“કાશી” ના મહારાજા સાહેબના પ્રમુખેથી સુશોભિત ભારતીય વિખ્યાત વિદ્વાનોની મહાસભામાં શાસ્ત્રદશી અને વિક્રવૃન્દારક એવા જેમને “આચાર્ય' પદવીના ગુરુસન્માનથી સન્માનિત કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા;
Who, being a ripe and learned scholar of world-wide reputation, was honoured with the distinguished title of Acharya ' (Shastravishärada Jainācharya ) being conferred upon him, by a large assembly of eminent Panditas of India, under the presidency of the Mahārājā of Benares ;

यो विश्वमैत्रीं दिशति स्म लोके प्रासारयत् सार्वजनीनधर्मम् । विद्याप्रचारे यतते स्म चोग्रं श्रीधर्मसूरिः प्रणिपत्यते सः । (विंशति- कुलकम् )
જેમણે જનતામાં વિશ્વમૈત્રીના ઉપદેશ કર્યા છે, સર્જન-ડિતાવહ ( માનવ) ધર્મના પ્રચાર કર્યા છે અને વિદ્યાને ફેલાવા કરવા પાછળ જેએ ખૂબ પ્રયત્ન વાત્ રહ્યા છે
એ શ્રી વિજયધમ સૂરિજીને વન્દન હા !
Who advised people universal brotherhood, preached religion ( Dharma ) of humanity and strove considerably to spread education and learning; to that great ascetic Vijaya Dharma Suri, I pay my homage.

(२२) विद्यालया शिवपुरी 'मुपतिष्ठते यः ' शत्रुञ्जये 'गुरुकुलं परिभासते यत् । श्री' आगरा 'नगरवर्ति च सुप्रसिद्ध श्रीज्ञानमन्दिरममः कृतयस्तदीयाः॥
शिवपुरी (वालिस२ स्टेट )नी 'वीरतत्य. પ્રકાશક મંડલ” સંસ્થા, “પાલિતાણા” નું જૈન ગુરુકુલ અને “આગરા નું જ્ઞાનમન્દિર એ એમની કૃતિઓ છે.
An educational institution at Shivapuri ( Gwalior ), a Jaina Gurukula at Palitana (Kathiawar) and Jnānamandira ( a grand public library ) at Agra, are the richest of his legacies.

यस्य ज्ञानमनन्तदर्शिसमयाम्भोरा शिमन्था चलो यस्य क्षान्तिरनल्पकोपनजनक्रोधाग्निधाराधरः । यस्य ब्रह्मतपोमहः प्रसृमरं भूपीठ उद्योतनं विश्वाभ्यर्चितसंयमो विजयते श्रीधर्मसूरीश्वरः ॥
જેમનું જ્ઞાન શાસ્ત્રસમુદ્રનુ મન્થન કરવામાં મન્થા ચલ સમુ, જેમની ક્ષમા ઉગ્ર ક્રોધીના ક્રોધાનલને શમાવામાં જલધર સમાન અને જેમનુ તેજસ્વી બ્રહ્મતપ ભૂમિ ઉપર ઉદ્યોતરૂપ, એવા, વિશ્વપ્રશસ્ત સંયમવાળા શ્રીવિજયધમ સૂરિ વિજયતે
Victory to Shree Vijaya Dharma Suri whose knowledge was like the churningmount in churning the ocean of scriptures, whose forbearance was like a shower of rain for the fire-like anger of the intensely angry, whose extending lustre of austerity of Brahmacharya (celibacy) was a light on the earth and whose self-restraint far eulogized.

भद्रं प्रोज्ज्वलनप्रभावमहसो विश्वोपकारैषिणो दुर्दान्तप्रतिवादिवक्रहृदय प्रह्लादनश्वेतगोः । वैराग्यामृतवर्षणप्रशमितप्रोद्दाम मोहाचिषः सर्वत्रापि गुणादरव्यसनिनः श्रीधर्मसूरेर्गुरोः ! ॥

ભદ્ર હા ઉજ્જવલ પ્રભાવક તેજવાળા, લેાકેાપકાર રસિક, હૃમ પ્રતિવાદીએનાં વક્ર હૃદયને આનન્દ પમાડવામાં ચન્દ્રસમા અને વૈરાગ્યરૂપ સુધાની વર્ષોથી શમાવ્યા છે. વિકટ મેહાગ્નિ જેમણે એવા તથા સર્વત્ર ગુણાદર કરવાના વ્યસની ગુરુદેવ શ્રી વિજયધ સૂરિને !

Be good to the preceptor Vijaya Dharma Suri who was possessed of high dignity and lofty spirit, who was greatly inclined to doing good to others, who was like the moon in pleasing the crooked minds of hard opponents, who was able to quell down the intense fire of ignorance or infatuation by pouring the nectar-like instruction of detachment and who was wont to appreciate the virtues of any person !

(२५) धर्मयोगप्रकाशाय कर्मयोगविहारिणे । आत्मयोगप्रसक्ताय गुरवेऽयं कृतोऽञ्जलिः ।।
ધર્મગમાં પ્રકાશતા, કર્મયોગમાં વિહરતા અને આત્માગમાં રમતા એવા શ્રી ગુરુદેવ વિજયધર્મસૂરિને मा भारी मत!!
This is my pure devout salutation with folded hauds to the great Guru shining with धर्मयोग ( religious activities ), enjoying कर्मयोग ( works benefitting people ) and sporting in आत्मयोग ( Spirituality ).
रचनासमयादिनिर्देशःश्रीधर्मसूरिसंस्थासंवत्सरपञ्चविंशतिस्मरणे । गूर्जर-इंग्लिश-अर्थाढयैः श्लोकैः पञ्चविंशत्या ॥ १ ॥ गूर्जर-विश्रुत-'पट्टन' एष कृतोऽञ्जलिरमुष्य शिष्येण । त्रि-ख-ख-द्विविक्रमाब्दे वैशाखे न्यायविजयेनं ॥ २ ॥
