________________ PREFACE OF THE GENERAL EDITOR . . ... ... .. ... : I got an opportunity, by a piece of good luck, to visit Jesalmere and inspect its famous Jaina Jnana Bhandaras for a period of five months, from December 1942 to April 1943. I had with me a company of good scholars and copyists viz. Pandit Keshavaram Shastri, Curator of the Mss. Library of Gujarat. Vidya Sabha, Ahmedabad, and a scholar of repute, Pandit Amritlal Mohanlal Bhojak, a fine and sound scholar of Prakrit, thentic copyists of the script of ancient Palm-leaf manuscripts-Shri Chimanlal Bhojak, Shri Rasiklal Bhojak, Pandit Shantilal Sheth, and. Shri Mulchand Vyas, Shri Jayagopal Vyas and Shri Meghraja Vyas of Nagor and others. pe In the course of these five months I got copied from those Bhandaras hundreds of rare unpublished and unknown small and big works in Sanskrit, Prakit, Apabhramsa, old. Rajasthani, Gujarati, Hindi and Vraja languages...existing in manuscript form; I decided to publish some of these in the Singhi Jain Granthamala edited by me. As a result of this some works are already published and some are in the press." Sabdaratnapradipa which is being presented to the learned world as the nineteenth number of Rajasthana Puratana Granthamala was discovered from the Jnanabhandara of Jesalmere. A copy of this work was prepared by Pandit K. K. Shastri from two-three well preserved Mss. of the Jnana Bhandara. This copy is in possession of the Gujarat Vidya Sabha, Ahmedabad. I had at the time thought of publishing this work. In 1950 Rajasthana Puratattya Mandira was established by the Rajasthan Government under my Directorship. In order to bring to light the wealth of literature preserved in Rajashthan, I organised on a large scale the publication of Rajasthana Puratana Granthamala. The chief aim of this series is to publish as many works as possible out of hundreds of works lying hidden in Jesalmere and other places in Rajasthana. Hence the publication of a number of these works in the series, of which the present work is one. Prof. Dr. Hariprasad Shastri M.A., Ph.D., Assistant Director, B. J. ________________ regarding the work. The reader is referred to it for information, regarding these topics. . A cursory glance at the work will show that it is a kind of lexicon in Sanskrit. It is well known that from ancient times many scholars of Sanskrit learning have been preparing various kinds of lexicons and the activity still continues. From ancient times we have such works as Amara, Visva, Vaijayanti, Medini, Dhananjaya, Abhidhana-cintamani etc. In modern times we have huge works like Sabdakalpadruma, Vacaspatya Bshadabhidhana, Sabdastomamahanidhi, Sabdacintamani etc. We have also Sanskrit dictionaries prepared by western scholars like Wilson, Monier Williams, Macdonell and others. Of these the most important and authoritative is 'the St. Petersburg's Sanskrit-Worterbuch in seven volumes prepared by the German scholars Roth and Bothlingk. The work occupied more than fifty years of life of these scholars. It was published by the Royal Academy of Science, St. Petersburg (now Leningrad ), the imperial capital of Russia. For this reason the work is known to scholars as Petersburg Sanskrit Lexicon. The Deccan College Research Institute of Poona has undertaken, on a large scale the preparation and publication of Sanskrit Dictionary based upon, the principles of the modern science of linguistics. Along with the preparation of this work the Institute is publishing. old Sanskrit lexicons, small and big, such as Anekarthatilaka, Amaramandana, Saradiya nama-mala, Sivakosa, Nanartha-Ratna-Mala etc. This work also is being published with a similar purpose in view. It will, it is hoped, meet with approval of those scholars who desire to see the works of various branches of Sanskrit learning published. The name of the author of this work is not known nor are there any definite indications in the beginning or end of the work by which we can know something about the religion of the author. So, what the learned editor has said in his introduction, is proper. There are, however, one or two references in it by which one may guess that the author was a Jain. I refer to one of them for the consideration of the learned. In the 56th verse of the first Muktaka four meanings of Jina' are given, viz. (1) Vitaraga (as worshipped by the Jains) (2) Visnu, (3) Kandarpa and (4) Samanyakevalin. Of these the first two are to be found in other lexicons; but the third and the fourth meanings are not to be (generally found in other lexicons. Of these the fourth meaning viz. Samanyakevalin deserves special notice. According * to Jain scriptures those who attain Keyala Jnana are called Kevalins;

________________ iv ) and of these those kevalins who establish new Tirthas are called Tirthnkaras, while the rest simply Samanyakevalins; but both are necessarily called Jina. The use of the word Samanya-keyalin is not usually found anywhere excepting the Jain works; and so it is a technical term of Jainism. It is therefore possible to say that the author of the work might have been a Jain. There is another reference which should also be considered. In verse 71 of the first Muktaka four meanings of the word * Jayanti' are given. Of these the first indicates a city, the second a kind of herb, the third a daughter of Indra and the fourth the * Anuja' of Cetaka. This last meaning has a special connection with Jain tradition and literature. According to these, Cetaka was the Ganadhipati of Vaisali of Videha and Jayanti was a follower of Bhagavan Mahavira. There are interesting references to Jayanti in the Jain Agama and story literature. There is no reference whatsoever to Jayanti in any other Indian literature, However, there is a divergence in the relationship of Jayanti to Cetaka according to the Sabdaratnapra dipa. Whether the author of this work had some other Jain tradition in view or whether he is erring we cannot say. Whatever that may be, this reference shows the author of our work familiar with Jain traditions, which was not usual in non-Jain writers. So this reference leads one to believe that the author of this work might have been a Jain. The reference to Siva in the beginning is suggestive of Mangala and has a proper place in Jain tradition also. At the time of printing the old original mss., out of which the copy was prepared, were not available and therefore a few readings have remained doubtful. ________________ Introduction Manuscripts : This edition is primarily based on two manuscripts from the Bhandars at Jesalmer: A- A paper manuscript (No. 337) from the Big Bhandar. It consists of 6 leaves, 10" x 43" in size. There are 18 lines on each side, and each line contains about 56 or 57 letters. B- A paper manuscript from the Bhandar of Dungarji Yati.1 It consists of 8 leaves, 10" X 41 in size. Each page contains 15 lines, and each line consists of about 49 or 50 letters. Both the manuscripts are undated. The text is further collated with a manuscript of another work, the adhyayas of which considerably correspond to the first three adhyayas of this work. It, however, contains no portions corresponding to the remaining two adhyayas of this work. The manuscript is designated C and may be described as follows: i C- A paper manuscript of Barriers from the Vrddhichandra Bhandar at Jesalmer. It consists of 5 leaves, measuring 10" X 44". The back side of the last leaf is entirely blank, while the writing on its front side covers about half portion of the space, The colophon of the manuscript states that it was copied at Subhatapura on Sunday, the fifth day of the dark half of Magha in V. S. 1732 (1675 A. D.) * Of these A was..copied verbatim et literalim by my colleague Prof. K. K. Shastree, who was deputed to Jesalmer by the Gujarat Vidya Sabha at Ahmedabad, to copy some selected manuscripts there under the guidance of Muni Jinavijayji. He also collated his copy with the other two manuscripts and noted all variants found in them. This edition is prepared by me on the basis of this material supplied by the Gujarat Vidya Sabha. I have selected apt readings from any of the three manuscripts and tried to amend trivial variants which obviously appeared to be clerical errors. ________________ vi ) readings as they are, in asmuch as they could not be referred back to the original manuscripts which were not at my disposal while preparing this edition. I felt this difficulty vehemently in the case of the fifth adhyaya, which is copied very unsatisfactorily in both manuscripts. I have endeavoured to trace the correct readings as far as possible, but have succeeded only to a certain extent. The material for all the remaining adhyayas was to the mark on the whole. All the manuscripts are complete in their contents. C has, however, left off the last twenty verses (Nos. 73-92) of the second adhyaya, six (Nos. 73-78) of which are later given as an addendum at the end of the work. * A comparative study of the manuscripts brings out a few peculiar features, which may be noted as follows: (i) A contains the largest number of verses on the whole. (ii) B omits a number of verses that are given in A, but it rarely adds any verses that are not given in the latter. (iii) In comparision to B, C differs from A considerably in omission as well as in addition. (iv) In relation to A, B and C contain a number of common variants some of which are preferable to those given in A. The Title : The title of the work is generally given in its colophon, but the manuscripts of this work contain no general colophon at all. The adhyayas, however, bear colophons, some of which specify the title 9734TMS . It is especially specified in the colophon of the last adhyaya in both manuscripts. The title is not mentioned anywhere in body of the work, nor do any verses hint at the exposition of its significance. But the title given in the colophon of the adkyayas is a very apt title for a lexical work of this type. 'Taaragtt' means a lamp of word-jewels.' The jewel-lamp' is not uncommon in the Sanskrit literature. The metaphor of 'word-jewels' is very similar to that of 'word-pearls' given in the first introductory verse in A. The lexicon is thus likened to a lamp, which enlightens full aspects of jewels in the form of words. The title applies to this lexicon very appropriately, as it elucidates the denotation of several words, especially those that yield more than one meaning. But here the form is applied to a canto, and seems to convey the general sense of a pearl.' This is explicitly elucidated in the first verse given in A, wherein the word is figuratively styled 'word-pearl' (TOTA ). In accordance with this sense each canto may be taken to be a string of word-pearls (Total , which the verse introduces to the learned with special recommendation,8 Thus the term 6 well applies to the significance of the introductory verse in A. The use of this term may further be traced to the concluding verses of Cantos III and IV in both manuscripts. It is, therefore, adopted preferably in this edition, though it does not fit in the general title of the work. Contents : The 376479&iq is a work of lexical character, as mentioned above. It consists of five g as in all. The first three of them deal with homonyms, 5 the different denotations of which are enumerated in detail. The words are not arranged according to the alphabetic order of their initial or final letters. Nor are they classified according to the number of their syllables. But they are here classified into three sections on the basis of another peculiar principle. The first deals with those homoayms, to which the author has to devote a full verse in order to enumate the different denotations of each of them. It is, therefore, styled lic. The second to deals with those homonyms that can be treated in a half verse each. So it is called s tafore. The third 65 deals with those homonyms, each of which requires only a quarter of a verse for the enumeration of its different meanings. It is, therefore, styled Tiet . This system was very common in the Sanskrit lexicons of this type. 6 The subject-matter of the fourth y differs widely from that of the other a s. This 6% is devoted to the elucidation of the full denotation of technical terms like i, at, 2618, ferunt, qurfesa, g477, etc. The fifth deals with indeelinables( 8740), many of which denote more than one meaning. ________________ vili indeclinables, for some indeclinables treated in this are as well. Nor is this confined to any of the different classes pertaining to the system mentioned above. Some indeclinables are treated in full verses, some in half-verses, some in quarters of verses, and some even in fragments of quarters. Here it may be noted that indeclinables are not infrequently associated with homonymous substantives, as most of them bear several senses. The lexicon contains about 350 verses. It treats about 397 homonyms: 94 in full verses, 181 in half-verses, and 122 in quarters of verses. The fourth muktaka devotes 85 verses to the explanation of technical terms which number more than two hundred. The last deals with more than a hundred indeclinables in 40 verses. Thus the is a small lexicon, which treats only about 700 words in all. Treatment: The lexicon is written in verse, which was the usual form adopted for scientific works with a view to facilitate students to commit them to memory. The verses are all composed in the anuSTubh. except the two nafs given at the end of the Third and Fourth. It would have been better if the author put a corresponding af at the end of the others as well. The introductory verses (I, 1-3) are dedicated to Speech. Sarasvati, the Goddess of speech, is the only deity invoked in the The homonyms are not arranged according to any particular order. The choice of the first three homonyms (viz. fara, it and gft) however, seems to be significant. The author has simply aimed at classifynig homonyms according to the number of the s required to enumerate their different denotations. Accordingly the homonyms treated in the first generally yield four to eight meanings, those in the second usually convey two to four meanings, while those in the third generally bear only two meanings. The system of grouping homonyms according to lokAdhikAra, ardha-lokAdhikAra and pAdAdhikAra is also adopted in some other lexicons like the Like the auhor of this lexicon also follows no principle of arrangement for the inter se order of the numerous homonyms treated in his lexicon. Hemachandra has curiously combined both these orders in his a wherein the words in each are first arranged in an alphabetic order of the final consonants and the words ending in a common consonant are then arranged in an alphabetic order of the initial letters. In the all homonyms are first arranged according to their final letters as kAnta, khAnta, etc., each of these groups is next arranged according to the number of syllables as monosyllables, dissyllables, trisyllables, etc., and these words are finally arranged according to their initial letters. It, therefore, becomes very easy to find out a word in the lexicon. But the author of the has adopted none of these orders and arranged the homonyms at random. Hence it becomes very difficult to find out a word in this lexicon. An alphabetic Index of the homonyms has, therefore, been indispensable for it. In the treatment of homonyms the author generally repeats the homonym along with each of its several denotations which are put in apposition to it, eg., hariH siMho harirbheko harirvAjI hariH kapiH // ( 1, 6 ) But some times the author also adopts another method which facilitates him to cite more meanings by avoiding repetitions of the homonym. In that case the meanings are construed with the homonym in the relation, e. g., 48 bANe vAci pazau bhUmau dizi razmau jale'kSaNi / sva mAtari vajre'gnau mukhe satye ca godhvaniH // (1,15 ) In the Third Muktaka wherein the homonym generally conveys two meanings, the meanings are sometimes compounded and the homonym is accordingly put in the dual, e. 8. vallavau sUdagopAlau ( 3.10 ). Genders are shown merely by the form of the word, e. g., fara, fara: and far in I, 4. The technical terms treated in the Fourth Muktaka seem to have been arranged according to the different categories of their subjects. In the treatment of indeclinables the author has drawn no distinction between those that convey only one meaning () and those that convey more than one meaning (). The different denotations are here generllay put in the af, e. g., ukhANe phaDatyAhurvaSaT vauSaT tu tarpaNe / ( 5, 27 ) Thus the is not a merely homonymous lexicon like the zAzvatakoza or the anekArthadhvanimaJjarI. Nor is its title also confined to such a limited denotation. Nevertheless it does not tend to be a complete lexicon like the . It leaves synonyms out of its scope and hence it excludes a large number of common words that enrich the vocabulary of synonymous lexicons. Excepting the section of technical terms, the lexicon mostly appears to be a homonymous work. But even homonyms form a very small number in comparision to those given in a homonymous lexicon like the zAzvatakoza. The author: The colophons of the work contain no reference to the author. Nor do the verses of the text make any allusion to him. Thus the manuscripts contain no internal source of information about the author of the work. Nor do we come across any external data whereby we can definitely ascribe the work to. an author known from other the If the be as the zabdaratnadIpa, it may be attributed to Kalyana-malla who is known to be the author of the latter. ________________ [xi But from his particular preference to the words fa and at the commencement of the homonymous section we can infer that his personal leaning in religion was towards Saivism. The date: As the work makes no mention of any earlier lexicons, it is not possible to fix the upper limit of its date in a definite way. But its lower limit can be assigned to the thirteenth century, as it is not infrequently quoted by Sumatigani in his maNagharasArdhazatakavRtti which was written in V. S. 1295 (1238-39 A. D.) The homonymous section of this work bears great resemblance to the zAzvatakoza, which is dated about the 6th century. 8 Like the zabdaratnapradIpa, it als treats homonyms in full, half and quarter verses, and places words at random. But unlike the zabdaratnapradIpa, the zAzvatakoza has arranged the indeclinables in half and quarter verses. Secondly, both works commence with the word ',' and two verses (viz. I, 4 and I, 8) in this work are quite identical with the corresponding verses (Nos. 1 and 3) in the . But the works differ widely with respect to the selection of homonyms as well as the composition of the verses. The oza is obviously more comprehensive and more copious than the zabdaratnapradIpa as far as the homonymous section is concerned. However, this work has enlarged its scope not only by dealing with homonymous as well as nonhomonymous indeclinables, but also by adding a section on technical terms. Anyhow its close reletion to the deserves to be taken into consideration. Shri Ramavatara Sarma, and following him the late MMP Haraprasad Shastri10 enlists it among lexicons written mostly after the aft (which is assigned to the twelfth century), but I think it may be assigned to an earlier11 epoch on the ground that it has not adopted any regular order of arranging homonyms, which are usually arranged into certain systematic orders in the post-Sasvata lexicons like the vizvaprakAza ( 1111 A. D.), the anekArthakoza ( 12th cent.), the anekArthasaMgraha (1088-1175 A. D.), the arrafa (12th or 13th cent.), and the medinIkoza ( 12th cent. ). Accordingly the zabdaratnapradIpa may be placed between the 7th and the 12th century. It is undoubtedly distinct from the starafasistit composed by Gadasimha in 88 verses. But many of its verses are identical with those in the sa19af945 ft composed by Mahaksapanaka of Kashmir ( generally ascribed to the 12th cent.), which contains 320 verses. It is, however, very difficult to ascertain relation between the zabdaratnapradIpa and the anonymous anekArthadhvanimaMjarI as well as that between the anonymous anekArthadhvanimaJjarI and the anekArthadhvanimaJjarI by Mahaksapanaka.
