TheBhaktamara Stotraissomewhatdifferentandwecannotcompa rethetwo. TheNamaskaraMantraisasmallsmaranaconsistingofonlynineshortsentenceswhereastheBhaktam ara Stotraisalongpoemcomposedin Sanskrit, whichisquite difficultformanyJains. TheNamaskaraMantraisasim plecompositionofdevotionandobeisance. However, theimportanceoftheBhaktamara Stotrainthe Jainliteraryfie Idcannotbeignoredoroverlooked. TherearepeoplebothinIndiaandoutsidewhocanrecitethisstotrawitheaseand precisionofpronunciation.Infact, therearesmallchildren, evenoutsidelndia,whosemothertongueisnotGujarati, Hindior Sanskrit, buttheyhaverememberedtheBhaktamara Stotrabyheartandcanrecitealltheversesofthisstotr afaultlesslywithouthesitation. Therearepeoplewhowouldrecitethisdayandnight. Therearepeoplewhothinkthat theBhaktamara Stotrahasimmensepowersandcanfreemanfromallsortsofworriesanddifficulties. Thisistheonlyrecitationonwhichthemaximumnumbersofbooks;audiocassettesandvideocassettesaretobefou nd. Thishasbeentranslatedintomorethanadozenlanguages. Variouswriters whoeitherexplainorinterpretthesto traindifferentwayshavecomposeddozensorperhapshundredsofpoems. Thestotra'simportance alsoliesinthef actthatthereareatleastthreebeautifultemplesinindiatotallydevotedtothisstotra.Ineachtemplealltheversesofthi sstotrawiththeiryantrashavebeencarvedinmarble,andthestatuesofthefirst TirthankaraRishabhadeva,andthe poetofthisstotrahavebeenerectedinthesetemples. Thereisnodoubtthatanyonewholovesgoodpoetrywillbetouchedbythebeautyofthecomposition. Anyonewhoha snofaithbutwantstoexamineorevaluatethepoemfromaliteraryanglewillnodoubtpraiseitsbeautifulmasterlyco mposition. Thereforeitishardlysurprisingthatthosewhohaveanunwaveringfaithinthe Tirthankarasregardthisas algemofdevotionalliterature capableofmakingadevoteeimmortal'. Thepoeticwordselectioninthisstotra, theactofcomparisonofattributesofthe Tirthankaratothatofthesunormoon orthedeepestoceanisjustspellbinding. Onegoesonreadingthestotraandslowlygetsimmersedintheatmospher ethatitcreates. Peoplenotonlyrecitethisathomesorintemples,someworshipitbywayofrecitingmantrasassociatedwithitandso meevenworshiptheyantradiagrams. Thereisaproperritualofworshipspeciallydevisedwherelaypeoplejoininth eceremonyandpaytheirrespectstoeveryverseofthisstotra.ltisworth notingthattheimportanceofthisstotrahasin creasedwiththepassageoftime.
