TheNamaskaraMantraisasmallsmaranaconsistingofonlynineshortsentenceswhereastheBhaktam ara Stotraisalongpoemcomposedin Sanskrit, whichisquite difficultformanyJains. TheNamaskaraMantraisasim plecompositionofdevotionandobeisance. However, theimportanceoftheBhaktamara Stotrainthe Jainliteraryfie Idcannotbeignoredoroverlooked. TherearepeoplebothinIndiaandoutsidewhocanrecitethisstotrawitheaseand precisionofpronunciation.Infact, therearesmallchildren, evenoutsidelndia,whosemothertongueisnotGujarati, Hindior Sanskrit, buttheyhaverememberedtheBhaktamara Stotrabyheartandcanrecitealltheversesofthisstotr afaultlesslywithouthesitation. Therearepeoplewhowouldrecitethisdayandnight. Therearepeoplewhothinkthat theBhaktamara Stotrahasimmensepowersandcanfreemanfromallsortsofworriesanddifficulties. Thisistheonlyrecitationonwhichthemaximumnumbersofbooks;audiocassettesandvideocassettesaretobefou nd. Thishasbeentranslatedintomorethanadozenlanguages. Variouswriters whoeitherexplainorinterpretthesto traindifferentwayshavecomposeddozensorperhapshundredsofpoems. Thestotra'simportance alsoliesinthef actthatthereareatleastthreebeautifultemplesinindiatotallydevotedtothisstotra.Ineachtemplealltheversesofthi sstotrawiththeiryantrashavebeencarvedinmarble,andthestatuesofthefirst TirthankaraRishabhadeva,andthe poetofthisstotrahavebeenerectedinthesetemples. Thereisnodoubtthatanyonewholovesgoodpoetrywillbetouchedbythebeautyofthecomposition. Anyonewhoha snofaithbutwantstoexamineorevaluatethepoemfromaliteraryanglewillnodoubtpraiseitsbeautifulmasterlyco mposition. Thereforeitishardlysurprisingthatthosewhohaveanunwaveringfaithinthe Tirthankarasregardthisas algemofdevotionalliterature capableofmakingadevoteeimmortal'. Thepoeticwordselectioninthisstotra, theactofcomparisonofattributesofthe Tirthankaratothatofthesunormoon orthedeepestoceanisjustspellbinding. Onegoesonreadingthestotraandslowlygetsimmersedintheatmospher ethatitcreates. Peoplenotonlyrecitethisathomesorintemples,someworshipitbywayofrecitingmantrasassociatedwithitandso meevenworshiptheyantradiagrams. Thereisaproperritualofworshipspeciallydevisedwherelaypeoplejoininth eceremonyandpaytheirrespectstoeveryverseofthisstotra.ltisworth notingthattheimportanceofthisstotrahasin creasedwiththepassageoftime. VerseNo.(24)OLord!Youareaddressedbythesaintsas: eternal as far as your soul is concerned; the one has become omniscient because of destruction of his karma; you have a form which is beyond comprehension; the one who is uncountable. you are the first Tirthankara, the first to teach the worldly affairs to mankind; the one with attributes of Lord Brahma; you have aishvarya, the divine halo around you; you are without end, the soul is eternal and you have attained liberation.
