________________ Who is the Author of the Pañca-sūtra? 125 It is clearer in the 16th verse of the 12th Sodaśaka of the Sodaśaka-prakaraṇa (SP): Vyādhy-abhibhūto yadvan nirvinnas tena tat-kriyāṁ yatnāt/ Samyak karoti tadvad dīkṣita iha sādhu-sac-cestām /125 (ii) In the fourth Sūtra of the Pañca-sūtra, there is a group of sentences as follows: Se sama-lethu-kańcaņe sama-sattu-mitte niyatta-ggahadukkhe pasama-suha-samee sammas sikkhām āiyai, guru-kulavāsī, guru-paţibaddhe, viņīe, bhūyattha-darisī, na iyo hiyattaram ti mannai, sussūsāi-guna-jutte tattābhi-nivesā vihipare paramamaste tti ahijjai suttaṁ /26 The verses of the 12th Vimśikā of the Vimsati-vimśatikā, partly bearing verbal similarity and upholding the central though of these sentences, are as follows: Ittham vi hoi gada-suhaṁ tatto evopasama-suhaṁ //4// Sikkhā duggaṁmi pī jaha jāyai hamdi samaņa-szhassa / Taha cakka-vattino vi hu niyamena na jāu niya-kicce //5// Giņhai vihiņā sattam bhāveņa parama-maṁta-rūvatti 27 (iii) In the fourth Sūtra, there are sentences, such as: Āyao guru-bahumāņo avamjha-kāraṇatteņa / Ao parama-guru-saħjogo / Tao siddhi a-saṁsayaṁ /p8 The verse of the second Șodaśaka bears complete similarity with the above sentences, thus: · Guru-pāratantryam eva ca tad-bahumānāt adāśayānugatas/ Parama-guru-prāptee iha bījaṁ tasmāc ca moksa iti 10/29 The noteworthy feature here is that the phrase 'Avamjhakāratteņa' appearing in the text of the Pañca-sūtra has been explained as ‘Moksaṁ praty apratibaddha-sāmarthyaetutvena, 30 in the commentary, and the phrase 'sad-āśayānugataṁ' appearing in the verse of the Sodasaka has also been explained as 'Sadāśayah
