Ratnakarandaka-śrāvakācāra
पापमरातिधर्मो बन्धुर्जीवस्य चेति निश्चिन्वन् । समयं यदि जानीते श्रेयोज्ञाता ध्रुवं भवति ॥१४८ ॥
सामान्यार्थ – ‘पाप ही जीव का शत्रु है और धर्म ही जीव का हितकारी है, इस प्रकार निश्चय करता हुआ श्रावक यदि आगम को जानता है तो वह निश्चय से श्रेष्ठ ज्ञाता अथवा कल्याण का ज्ञाता होता है।
The householder who ascertains the Truth contained in the Scripture as “Demerit (pāpa) is the enemy of the soul and merit or righteousness (dharma) its friend,” is certainly the worthy knower of the Doctrine.

Ācārya Umāsvāmi’s Tattvārthasūtra:
शुभः पुण्यस्याशुभ: पापस्य ॥ ६-३ ॥ Virtuous activity is the cause of merit (punya) and wicked activity is the cause of demerit (pāpa).
