________________ POINTS TO BE NOTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE USE OF THE LOKA-PADA-SUCI (1) All verse-quarters ( padas ), whether they occur in the Constituted Text or the Critical Apparatus or Appendix I in the Critical Edition of the Mahabharata, are taken into account for this Index. (2) These verse-quarters are reproduced in Devanagari script in the alphabetical order as set forth below - Vowels : , ( si, :), 41, , , , , , , , , , , and at the scheme represented by si, T: (shown within brackets after s ) being made applicable mutatis mutandis to each of the vowels. Consonants : 4,( #, #, #1, #1, #1, fa, far, fa: ... etc.), a, 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 4, 8, 5, 2, 3, 5, T, o, a, 4, 7, 9, 7, 9, , 7, 8, A, 7, 7, (a), 3, 7, T, C, A, C- the scheme represented by #, #, #1, #1, #2, fa, fa, fas: ... etc. ( shown within brackets after *) being made applicable mutatis mutandis to each of the consonants, (3) Each verse-quarter is followed by the reference or references to the place or places where that verse-quarter occurs. These references are given in the serial order of the Parvans in the Critical Edition,* the order within a Parvan being : the Constituted Text, the Critical Apparatus, and the Appendix. In respect of the various references of a versequarter within a particular Parvan, the number of the Parvan is given only once. Such references are separated from one another by means of a semi-colon. (4) The figure in black or Clarendon Type indicates the Parvan in the Critical Edition of the Mahabharata : e.g., 1 indicates the Adiparvan ; 2 indicates the Sabhaparvan; 13 indicates the Anusasanaparvan. The next figure in running type represents the number of the adhyaya in that Parvan and the third figure the number of the verse in that adhyaya, Letters 5,5,5,,, and attached to the number of the verse denote respectively the first, the second, the third, the fourth, the fifth, and the sixth padas (or verse-quarters ) of that verse. (5) In the case of the star-passages in a Parvan ( given in the Critical Apparatus in the Critical Edition ), the star-number is followed by the number of the line, and the pada is indicated by the symbols, pr. (= the prior half of the line ) and post. ( = the posterior half of the line). (6) In the case of the Appendix-passages ( that is, the passages given in Appendix I) in a Parvan, the number of the Appendix-passage ( such as, e. g., App. 4 which denotes the fourth passage in Appendix I) is followed by the number of the line, which latter, in its turn, is followed by the symbol pr. (= the prior half of the line ) or post.
