________________ DOCTRINE OF KARMA 153 between their conditions is that all the abharvas' are eternally in this gunasthina, whereas only those ' bharyas' who by reason of certain unfavourable conditions do not reach salvation do so for a certain period of time. With the other 'bhavvas' this stage has no beginning but an end which comes sooner or later. With a being who fell from a higher stage and sank into wrong belief, it has a beginning as well as an end. 2. SĀSVĀDĀNA SAMYAGDRSȚI GUVASTHĪVA It is of very short duration lasting in the minimum one samaya' and in the maximum six ‘āralikās'. Those beings that possessed right belief produced by suppression of wrong belief during the period less than a 'muhurta' but who had lost it again on account of the breaking out of passions, are said to enjoy this guṇasthāna. After the lapse of the settled period, the being necessarily sinks back into the first guṇasthiina. 3. MIŚRA GUYASTHĀNA The fundamental characteristic of this stage is indifference which lasts only during the period less than forty-eight minutes (muhūrta). It is a mixed belief produced by the mingling of truth and falsity. After the lapse of the time of the stay on this stage, the being attains wrong or right belief, according to the circumstances. 4. AVIRATA S.4MYAGDRSȚI GUYASTHĀNA To this stage belong those beings who possess right belief and have the knowledge of truth and falsity but on account of the realisation of the 'apratyākhyānāvaraṇa kaşayas' are not capable of practising self-discipline. The duration of this stage is in the minimum less than a muhūrta and in the maximum more than thirty-three sāgaropamas. 5. DEŠAVIRAT 4 SAJYAGDRSȚI GUYASTHĀVA In this state of virtue, partial self-discipline exists. The duration is in the minimum less than a muharta and in the maximum somewhat less than a 'pūrvizkoti'. 6. PRAMATTA SANYAT.1 GUVASTHANA The being belonging to this gunasthāna attains complete selfdiscipline, although he is disturbed through negligence produced by the realisation of the sanjyalana passions.
