Index, prefaced to my Fourth Report, I attempted to give in index form all the information about books and authors which could be gleaned from the extracts accompanying my first three Reports. The present Index takes up that work where it was left off, and deals with the extracts accompanying my Fourth Report, as well as with the Patan books already referred to. In the two Indices taken together I hope it may be found that I have been able to make some small additions to our knowledge of a subject that is still obscure. I have at least been at some pains to put more competent crities on the way to correct the errors into which I may have fallen. The Second Appendix, of extracts from Paper manuscripts preserved at Patan, has also been dealt with in this Index. They will serve to show that Patan has in it important books which are not very old, as well as books which are both important and venerable in the antiquity of the copies preserved there. The Third Appendix contains the usual collection of extracts from books purchased during the period under report for Government, and the Fourth Appendix gives the list of manuscripts so purchased. These will be dealt with in a following Report.
