________________ FOREWORD In the history of Jainism there are numerous instances from which we can derive inspiration for preservation of life, conservation of forests, and optimum utilisation of mineral resources. The code of conduct sanctioned for the Jain Sangha can not only help preserve the purity of life but also the sanctity of our environment. Ahimsa, vegetarianism, controlled way of life, and the concept of Aparigraha constitute the main tenets of Jainism. These doctrines emphasise the importance of simplicity, charity, and service in life. Jainism has played an important role in shaping human life and in maintaining balance in environment. Beside philosophy, Jain saints and their followers have also contributed handsomely to the literature, art, and culture of India. The Jain Granth Bhandaras are recognised as part of our proud heritage. The Jain temples have attracted people for their sculpturesque beauty. The world of to-day is struggling with various problems. The developed countries, recognising collection of commodities and construction of machineries as symbol of development, are troubled by prospects of war. Their rivalries are leading them to the brink of war. The developing countries are facing the problems of population and poverty. In order to solve these problems, they are playing havoc with nature. The entire world is facing the problem of pollution.
