cannot have two masters, God and Mammon at the same time."20 Hence Jessu said, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter in the kingdom of God."21 The attraction for wealth attaches the individual to the earth and hence he cannot go to the heaven. According to Lord Mahavira, 'One who enmasses wealth and does not distribute it properly, cannot be liberated. (Asamvibhagi nahu tassa mokkho).22 Passion is unquenchable (Duppu aea ime aya). The more one gets, the more one craves for. 2 3 The sign of the self-realized is contentment. Hence Lord Mahavira had always praised contentment. 24 According to him, "Those who wash away the defilement of greed and passion by the water of contentment and do not have attachment even for food, are pure in consciousness." 2
5) Truthfulness (Satya) :
Truthfulness is the sign of wisdom. To describe a thing as it is, is truthfulness. Truthfulness expresses itself in word, thought and deed. What the wise man says, he translates that into action (Jaha vai taha kavi) 26 However, Truth is also accompanied with Beauty and Goodness. Thus it is not proper to speak the bitter truth. According to Lord Mahavira, while speaking truth, one must be conscious and detached, and speak only that which is for the good of the people."27 One should not hurt anybody by one's word. Hence instead of using absolute and categorical langauge, Jainism stresses on conditional statements and asks to qualify every judgement with "syat" (Relatively speaking) According to Lord Mahavira, "Truth is God." (Saccam khu bhagavan).2 8 Thus to be in truth is to be in God-consciousness. In other words, being in God-consciousness Is manifestsd in truthfulness.
6) Self-restraint (Samyam) :
In the state of ignorance, one is always out of oneself and leads the life of recklessness and sensepleasure. Ignorance leads to extroversion and thus one
