________________ Introduction 11 (vi) He further exhibits his authentic knowledge of various śāstras, - grammar, word-power, metres and figures in particular. To cite an illustration, with the analysis of the word da, the author refers in full details to the Gods in the Hindu pantheon as also to the Jaina Tirthankaras and so on. Again, while explaining the word in the author describes in full details the various 371TT, embraces etc., mutual approach of man and woman, and so on. 15 The 'Parimala', with patient, extensive effort, thus acts as a further extension of the Vrtti' and it is useful in many respects. The effort decisively proves the deeper thinking, analysis and grasp of the doctrines propounded and laid down. It is therefore really unfortunate that Amara Candra could give his *Parimala' Vrtti only on 1/3rd of the work. Scholarship of Amara Candra In the Kārilās, Vrtti and Parimala, the following traits of Amara Candra's scholarship may be laid down : (i) Amara Candra Yati has a thorough grasp over Sanskrit poetics upto his time and he knows very well what he should contribute. Again, he has read, fully grasped and thoroughly mastered, not only Jaina śāstras and works but also Hindu and Bauddha śāstras and works. That explains his brief but basic and subtle analysis of 14 śāstras in which even 'Nātya' and 'Kāma' are included. His understanding and grasp of these śāstras is full, deep, thorough, all-sided and allpervasive. (ii) His understanding of Indian culture, its traditions, mythology, history etc., is thorough and deep, minute and precise. (iii) His concept of poetic taste is very high and his ideal poets are Kālidāsa etc., his inspirers are Vyāsa, Vālmīki etc. 16. (iv) His expression is clear, smooth, flowing, effortless and never going irrelevant or astray. This is quite natural of a poet, scholar, philosopher and pundit that he is. (v) He is a wonderful lexicographer. His mastery over word and sense, synonyms and homonyms, and all varied experiments that a poet can possibly make with word and meaning is unique. (vi) His command over ślesa in all its varieties found in poetry is also Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
