The subject of painting is divided under two heads 1. nirdoṣa-citrakarma (pure painting) and 2. the sadoṣa-citrakarma (impure painting). The nirdoșacitrakarma consists of the painting of trees, mountains and rivers, seas, buildings and creepers, while the sadoṣa

citrakarma consists of paintings of flying figures, goddesses and women. The practice of both kinds of paintings was forbidden for the monks. However, this injunction seems to have been relaxed in the medieval period when the Jaina Jñana-Bhaṇḍāras became the repositories of many painted manuscripts and patas.
