________________ 12 Mahavira and Buddha and came seven or eight steps ahead of the throne, in a. blissful state ; in the uttara sājiga position? he masked his mouth by a scarf; and chanting “Namotthunam”, he said', ‘To thee, O Mahāvīra, who first sowed the seeds of religion in my soul, my religious preceptor, I bow down in reverence from this move place, for thou art yet staying away (in the garden)” After this, when Mahāyīra had arrived. at Campā, Koņika also presented himself in the religious assembly of Mahāvīra. Not only Koņika had visited Mahāvīra more than once, but also, after Mahāvīra's uvāgacchittā.....evam vayasi.....jassanam devänuppiyā damsarņam kamkhanti, jassanam devānuppiya.damsanam patthanti, jassanam devā drasanam abhilasanti jassanam devā nābhagottassavi savanattāe hatthatuttha jāva hiyayā bhavanti senam samaņe bhagavam Mahāvīre.........campāenayarie uvanagaramgāmam uvāgae, ca:ipānagari pusnabhaddaccie samāsariākāme! Ibid, 11-18. The uttarāsariga position is the one, in which a Jain layman bows down ; he has to mask his mouth with a scarf, which should be a single piece of cloth without any joints, in order not to kill the lives of air. Namotthunam, which is also known as Sakkathui, (Sakrastuti, is a hymn to pay homage to the Tirthaikaras. This also indicates that Konika was a Jain 'Śrāraka'. 3.
