I write to thank you for your precious gift of books. Part 2 of the Dvadasaram Nayacakram arrived long since I did not acknowledge it at the time, as I was away from Cambridge when it arrived. I should have written you immediately upon my return and I apologize for the delay Part 1 of your edittion of the Ayaranga suttam arrived only last werk, after the arrival of your letter of inquiry.
With these two books you have added greatly to the sources for the study of Jainism and indeed of Indian thought and r non-Jaina they are important in two quite different ways. The Nayacakram for the detailed information it gives on philosophical thearies; the Ayaranga for nobility of many of its #uttas (e,g./132 સ TIMા સર્વે મૂતા સવે ગોવા સરવે સત્તા 77 Foot etc.) and for the valuable historical information of the third Cula. But they are both from one and the same tradition, which you have done so much to publish and to make understood. The learning and care with which you have done your work incites my admiration.
I hope this finds you in good health. With myself all is well. I have perhaps too many pupils in Sanskrit because it is becoming difficult to find jobs for all of them. But it is a joy, as one grows older, to see young people learning a subject that one loves. Several of them, I think, will become better sanskritists tban J. So in this small respect the world is improving, With many thanks I rem ain.
