Uv 1.4.5; Amta 3.70; 6.14), arjava > ajjava (Th. 4.71; 6.27; Sam 10.1 etc.), arta , atta (A.1.13; 5.18; Su 1.5.25;1.10.4; Uv 2.22, 24, 28; Pan 2.2; Vip 1.1.57, 1.2.4 2 etc.) adhya , addha (Sū 2.7.3, Bh. 2.94.3.32; Nă 1.2.7.1.3.8; Uv 1.11.16: 2.3; Amta 3.6,33,55, Aņu 3.5,66; Vip 1.1.70.1.10.3 etc.). Sanskrit s has four types of development in Prakrit as well as in Ardhamagadhi, these are, a, i, uand ri in initial position. But except in very few cases the initial; becomes a, i and u in Ardhamågadhi. Here, Some examples of rbecoming a are given below - rju > amju(A. 3.5;15: Su 1.9.1. 1.10.1; 26.13 etc) sta , åtta (Nā.1.7,36.1,3,5 etc.), rmadharaka > anadharaga (Ná 1.18.21,33), rņabhanjaka, anabamjaka (Paņ.3.3.), rnabala » anavala (Pan. 2.3) etc. There is no such changes have been found regarding the development of Sanskrit à in the language of Amga literature. But in some places due to the compansatory lengthening a becomes a, e.g. aśvaśikṣa , asasikkha (Sam. 32.7), aśvasena , asasena (Sam.Pra.220.3), aśvattha , ásottha (Sam. Pra. 231.2, Bh 22.3), aśvatthapravāla , ásotthapavāla (A. cu 1.109), aśvatthamanthus asotthamamthu (A.cu 1.111), aśvayuj > asoya (A. cu 25.15. Sam 15.5; 36.4: Bh 1211,125 Na 1.5.75 etc.), Hemacandraâs sútra lupta ya ra va śa sa sám—śa sa-sám dirghaḥ(1.43) is meant for compensatory lengthening. Like Prakrit, in the language of Amga literature we can have some remnants of the changing of some dissimilar vowels into i. e.g. angåra» imgála (Su 1.5.7, 2.2.77; Th. 4.177, Bh 2.64, 66, Nā 1.16.52; Amta 3.89, Anu 3.30; Vip 1.4.16 etc.), angāra karşanis imgala kaddhani (Bh. 16.6), angāra karman » imgala kamma (Bh 8.24 2.uv.1.38), atra, ittha (A.4.20). In the same way.es i, e.g. ekacatvarimśatigayåla (Bh. 2.118), ekasasthi , igasatthi (Sam.88.3). r» i- in place of r. we can have a large number of ex Jain Education International For Personal & Private Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
