________________ (3) Ist Kirana opens with the benedictory verse in which the blessing of Lord Sri Kșşņa are invoked. The author defines poetry as कविवाङ निर्मितिः काव्यम् which means that. poetry is comprised of a creation made by a poet's speech. Stepping into the shoes of Viśvanātha, the author of the Sāhitya Darpaņa, he criticises the definition of poetry given by Mammața, Vāmana and even by Viśvanātha and in the end establishes the validity of his own definition of poetry. Mammața's definition is too wide Ativyäpta as on account of the absence of blemishes and the presence of excellances and figures of speech it will be applicable to such sentences-- Kuranganayană etc. which are not regarded as kāvya. Viśvanātha's definition atai THTC 14 too is inappropriate for the following verse कूर्मलोमपटच्छन्नः शशशृगधनुर्धरः । एष वन्ध्यासुतो याति खपुष्पकृतशेखरः ॥ according to the norms laid down by Viśvanāthanti Fire Thematal5 errefragmente qeter:" is not vākya as there is no compatibility here which is the essential characteristic of a vākya. But the verse is admitted kāvya by all. Says he- TFT aratatarasfq ftouagiara The sentence Thütfə: & fagfa aft: will be included within the scope of poetry on account of the depiction of feeling of love whereas the status of poetry is denied to such expressions. Hence the definition propounded by Visvanātha is vitiated by both the fallacies of the too wide and too narrow definition (Ativyāpti and Avyāpti). Vamana's definition AFRICHT #TOFT is also not acceptable for Riti is an external appendage and does not form the inner content of poetry. He mentions the equipments of poetry (Kāvya Hetu) of which the poetic genius (Bija) stands supreme- te ga #facteur Truf fasquilho (P.12) He classifies poetry into grades. Poerty Par excellence (uttam o uttama) Excellent (Uttama) Middle, (Madyama) and Inferior (Avara). There are many benefits accruing from poetry. But the aesthetic bliss relished through the composition and enjoyment of Kāvya delineating Lord Sri Krşņa stands above all and is the highest purpose of any poetry.
